Renfrew FC 2-1 Stirling Albion: Cup Upset as Renfrew Stun League Two Visitors

Renfrew FC produced one of the standout results of the Scottish Cup weekend, defeating Stirling Albion 2-1 at New Western Park on Saturday, 24 October 2026. The home side built a two-goal lead and then held off a late fightback to secure a memorable victory over their League Two opponents.

Stirling Albion entered the tie as favourites, but Renfrew played with belief from the first whistle. Their pressing, energy and willingness to attack down the flanks unsettled the visitors, and the home crowd responded with a vocal backing that grew louder as the match progressed.

Match Overview

The opening exchanges were cagey, with Stirling Albion enjoying more possession but struggling to break down a disciplined Renfrew shape. Renfrew’s first meaningful attack brought the opening goal in the 18th minute, a sweeping move that ended with a confident finish inside the penalty area.

Stirling looked for an immediate response, but Renfrew’s goalkeeper made two important saves to preserve the lead. The home side doubled their advantage shortly before half-time when a quick counter-attack caught Stirling exposed at the back. The visitors pulled one back with a header from a corner in the 74th minute, setting up a tense finale, but Renfrew defended with courage to see the game out.

Key Moments

• 18th minute: Renfrew take the lead with a flowing move and a composed finish from the edge of the box.
• 34th minute: A crucial save from the Renfrew goalkeeper keeps the home side in front.
• 43rd minute: Renfrew double their lead on the counter-attack, finishing calmly after a rapid break.
• 74th minute: Stirling Albion halve the deficit with a powerful header from a corner.
• 89th minute: Renfrew clear a dangerous free-kick and hold on through four minutes of stoppage time.

Tactical Story

Renfrew’s game plan was built on compact defending and quick transitions. They allowed Stirling Albion possession in harmless areas but pressed aggressively whenever the ball moved into midfield. That approach forced turnovers and gave Renfrew the platform to counter at speed.

Stirling Albion struggled to find rhythm in the final third. Their best moments came from set pieces, which produced the goal, but they lacked the incisiveness needed to break down a well-organised Renfrew back line. The visitors pushed extra bodies forward late on, yet Renfrew’s discipline and work rate held firm.

Standout Performers

Renfrew’s goalkeeper was excellent, making a string of saves and commanding his area under late pressure. The midfield pair in front of the defence also deserve credit for their tireless pressing and intelligent positioning. Up front, the goalscorers took their chances with maturity beyond their level.

For Stirling Albion, the set-piece goal was a reminder of their threat from dead balls, but the overall performance will frustrate the coaching staff. They had enough possession to get something from the game but were undone by two moments of clinical counter-attacking.

What the Result Means

Renfrew FC move into the next round with a result that will be remembered for years. Beating a League Two side gives the club confidence and raises hopes of another cup run. Stirling Albion, meanwhile, must turn their attention back to league duties after a disappointing exit.
