Match Overview

The Scottish Cup’s early rounds often deliver raw, passionate football, and this encounter was no exception. It was a cruel way for Lochee to exit, but a deserved victory for the visitors’ persistence.

Tactical Story

Lochee United deployed a direct 4-4-2, looking to use their physical presence from set-pieces and long throws. Inverurie Loco Works preferred a more patient 4-3-3, building through midfield and attacking with pace on the wings. The decisive tactical battle was in transitions: Inverurie repeatedly caught Lochee pushing too many bodies forward, exploiting space behind the full-backs. Lochee’s equaliser came from their most potent weapon—an aerial set-piece—but their inability to contain Inverurie’s counter-attacks ultimately cost them.

Standout Players

Inverurie’s centre-forward was the match-winner, scoring twice and leading the line with intelligence. Their attacking midfielder orchestrated play and provided the assist for the late winner. For Lochee, the towering centre-back was a threat in both boxes and scored the equaliser, while the goalkeeper made several fine saves to keep the tie alive until the final minutes.

Season Impact and Cup Context

For Inverurie Loco Works, the victory means progression in the Scottish Cup and a potential money-spinning tie in the next round. For Lochee United, the defeat is a painful exit, but their performance showcased the competitiveness of the lower leagues in Scottish football. The Scottish Cup remains a stage where smaller clubs can dream, and Inverurie’s reward is a place in the hat for the next draw.
