Huntly and Annan Athletic play out 2-2 Scottish Cup draw

Huntly and Annan Athletic FC produced an entertaining 2-2 draw in the Scottish Cup on 24 October 2026, with the tie remaining finely balanced after a contest full of momentum swings. Annan Athletic, the higher-ranked visitors, enjoyed spells of control, but Huntly showed character and attacking intent to twice respond and keep their cup hopes alive.

The match had the feel of a proper cup tie: committed challenges, quick transitions and a crowd engaged until the final whistle. With the score level, both sides will feel they could have won it, but neither could find the decisive third goal.

Match overview

Annan Athletic started with purpose, moving the ball quickly and asking questions of Huntly’s back line. Their early pressure was rewarded when Michael Garrity found space in the box and finished confidently. Huntly responded well, increasing their tempo and finding space in wide areas. The equaliser arrived before half-time, giving the home side renewed belief.

The second half followed a similar pattern. Annan Athletic regained the lead through a well-worked move, only for Huntly to hit back again with a header from a set piece. Both teams pushed for a winner in the closing stages, but the defences held firm in the final moments.

Key moments

• 14th minute: Annan Athletic took the lead through Michael Garrity, who finished neatly after a flowing move down the right.
• 36th minute: Huntly equalised when Robbie Foster latched onto a through ball and slotted past the goalkeeper.
• 57th minute: Annan Athletic restored their advantage with a composed finish from the edge of the area.
• 74th minute: Huntly captain Ryan Farquhar powered home a header from a corner to make it 2-2.
• 88th minute: Both sides had half-chances to win it, but neither could find a way through.

Tactical story

Annan Athletic looked to control possession and build through midfield, using their wide players to stretch Huntly’s defence. Their movement off the ball created problems in the first half, particularly when they switched play quickly. However, they were unable to fully contain Huntly’s direct counterattacks and set-piece threat.

Huntly’s approach was more pragmatic. They defended in a compact shape, looked to win second balls and attacked quickly when the opportunity arose. Their willingness to put crosses into the box paid off with the equalising header, and their energy in the final 20 minutes ensured Annan Athletic could not close the game out.

Standout players

Garrity was a constant threat for Annan Athletic, leading the line with intelligent movement and clinical finishing. Huntly’s Foster was equally important, stretching the visiting defence and scoring a well-taken equaliser. Farquhar’s leadership and aerial presence gave Huntly a foothold in both boxes, while the midfield battle was fought with intensity throughout.

Both goalkeepers made important saves in the second half, ensuring the tie remained level. The match also underlined the value of set pieces in cup football, with Huntly’s late equaliser coming from a routine that was executed perfectly.

Cup impact

The draw keeps Huntly’s Scottish Cup run alive and gives them another opportunity to test themselves against higher-ranked opposition. For Annan Athletic, there will be frustration at failing to hold onto their lead twice, but also encouragement from the quality of their attacking play. The tie remains unresolved, and both clubs will believe they have a strong chance of progressing.

In a competition where momentum and fine margins matter, this 2-2 draw delivered exactly the kind of drama the Scottish Cup is known for. Huntly showed resilience, Annan Athletic showed attacking quality, and the replay or return fixture now carries even greater significance.
