Deveronvale 2-3 Tranent FC — Tranent FC produced one of the results of the Scottish Cup second round, travelling north to Banff and beating Highland League side Deveronvale 3-2 in a five-goal thriller at Princess Royal Park on Saturday, 3 October 2026. The Lowland League visitors led three times in a compelling, open contest and held on through a nervy final stretch to secure their place in the next round.

Match Overview

Cup ties between Highland League and Lowland League clubs have become one of the most reliable sources of drama in the Scottish Cup, and this one delivered from the first whistle. Deveronvale set up to attack, pushing their full-backs high and looking to get early service into the front two, while Tranent were happy to sit a fraction deeper and spring forward at speed.

The result was a game with genuine chances at both ends, a frantic midfield battle and a final twenty minutes in which Deveronvale threw everything at an increasingly deep-lying away defence.

Key Moments

• 9th minute: Tranent take the lead with their first meaningful attack, a low driven shot from the edge of the box finding the bottom corner.
• 26th minute: Deveronvale level with a header from a deep cross, the striker rising above his marker at the back post.
• 44th minute: Tranent restore the advantage right before the interval, punishing a loose pass with a quick, decisive counter-attack.
• 61st minute: A scrappy equaliser makes it 2-2 and swings momentum firmly towards the home side.
• 78th minute: Tranent score the winner, a first-time finish from a cut-back after a driving run down the right.
• 90+4 minutes: A last-ditch block and a clearance off the line deny Deveronvale a dramatic leveller.

Tactical Story

The decisive factor was Tranent's speed in transition. Every time Deveronvale committed bodies forward, the visitors looked capable of punishing them with three or four passes. Their second goal in particular was a textbook counter-attack, moving from their own half to the back of the net in under ten seconds.

Deveronvale's pressure in the final quarter was relentless, and their willingness to load the box with crosses made for a difficult finish. But Tranent's back line, backed by a goalkeeper who claimed several dangerous deliveries under pressure, just about survived the siege.

Standout Players

Tranent's right-sided attacker was the outstanding performer on the pitch, involved in two of the three goals and a constant outlet when his team needed to relieve pressure. Their midfield anchor also deserves credit for the amount of ground he covered in the closing stages. Deveronvale's centre-forward was a handful throughout, winning headers and dragging defenders out of position, and scored one and created another.

What It Means

For Tranent FC, this is exactly the kind of away result that builds belief in a cup run and raises the club's profile in the Lowland League conversation. A third-round draw against SPFL opposition now becomes a realistic and lucrative possibility.

Deveronvale exit with their reputation intact after a committed performance, but they will reflect on the two goals conceded from turnovers and the fine margins that decided a tie they were never far from salvaging.
