Formartine United produced a professional away performance to beat Civil Service Strollers FC 2-0 in the Scottish Cup, scoring in each half to secure a place in the next round draw. The Highland League side were patient in possession, took their chances when they arrived and kept a clean sheet against spirited opposition at Christie Gillies Park.

Civil Service Strollers FC 0-2 Formartine United

The opening goal came after a period of sustained pressure from the visitors, who worked the ball into the box and finished with composure to break the deadlock. Civil Service Strollers responded well, enjoying a spell of possession and forcing a couple of saves, but they could not find a way back into the game before the interval.

Formartine United doubled their advantage after the break, capitalising on a defensive lapse and finishing clinically to put the tie beyond doubt. From there, the visitors managed the game expertly, slowing the tempo and restricting the Strollers to speculative efforts from range as the clock ran down.

Key Moments

The first goal was the turning point of the contest. Having survived an energetic opening from the home side, Formartine United found a rhythm and struck with a well-worked move that cut through the Strollers' midfield and defence. The second arrived shortly after the restart, killing any momentum the hosts had built during the half-time break.

Civil Service Strollers pushed men forward in the closing stages, and their best chance came from a set piece that flashed narrowly wide. Formartine's goalkeeper was called into action once more late on, tipping a fierce drive over the bar to preserve the shutout.

Tactical Story

Formartine United set up with a disciplined midfield block and looked to spring forward quickly on the counter, targeting the space behind the Strollers' full-backs. That approach paid off handsomely, with both goals coming from transitions where the visitors moved the ball forward with purpose and precision.

Civil Service Strollers, for their part, tried to build patiently from the back and use their wide players to stretch the opposition. They found joy in patches but were repeatedly undone by Formartine's pressing and the visitors' ability to win the second ball in midfield.

What It Means

Formartine United advance with confidence and a valuable away clean sheet, a combination that will make them a tricky proposition in the next round. Civil Service Strollers exit the competition but can take encouragement from periods of the game in which they matched a strong Highland League outfit.
