Brechin City and Strathspey Thistle share four goals in Scottish Cup thriller

Brechin City and Strathspey Thistle will meet again after a 2-2 draw in the Scottish Cup on 24 October 2026, with the visitors twice coming from behind to force a replay. Brechin led on two separate occasions at Glebe Park, but Strathspey Thistle showed real character to stay in the tie and earn another shot at progression.

Match overview

Brechin City started brightly and looked to impose themselves early, pressing high and getting crosses into the box. Strathspey Thistle initially sat deeper and tried to hit on the counter, but they grew into the game as the first half wore on. The second half was far more open, with both teams creating chances and the momentum swinging back and forth. In the end, a replay felt like the fairest outcome from a committed cup tie.

Key moments

• 12th minute: Jamie Russell gave Brechin City the lead with a low finish after a neat exchange on the edge of the area.
• 28th minute: Finlay MacLeod equalized for Strathspey Thistle with a composed curled effort from the right side of the box.
• 61st minute: Callum Smith restored Brechin's advantage from the penalty spot after Russell was brought down inside the area.
• 84th minute: Liam Grant headed home a corner at the back post to make it 2-2 and send the away support into raptures.
• 90+2 minutes: Brechin almost won it late, but Ewan Loudon's goalbound shot was blocked in a crowded penalty area.

Tactical story

Brechin City used a direct 4-4-2 approach, looking to win second balls and get early service into their front pair. Strathspey Thistle were more cautious in a 4-5-1 shape, keeping numbers behind the ball and relying on quick transitions through MacLeod and Grant. The visitors' willingness to keep pushing after conceding twice was the defining feature of the match, and their set-piece threat eventually paid off with the late equalizer.

Standout players

Russell was at the heart of Brechin's best attacking moments, winning the penalty and opening the scoring with a composed finish. MacLeod was Strathspey's most dangerous outlet, while Grant's aerial presence in both boxes made him a key figure in the comeback. Both goalkeepers also made important saves in the second half to keep the score level.

Season impact

The replay adds another fixture to a busy schedule for both clubs, but it also offers a route into the next round of the Scottish Cup and the financial boost that comes with cup progress. Brechin City will be frustrated not to have held on, while Strathspey Thistle will travel to the replay with renewed belief after twice fighting back away from home.
