CSKA Moscow edged the latest Russian Premier League derby with a controlled 2-0 victory over Spartak Moscow at a packed VEB Arena on 25 October 2026. The result gives CSKA bragging rights in one of Russian football’s fiercest rivalries and adds three valuable points to their push near the top of the standings.

Match overview

The game was billed as a test of CSKA’s discipline against Spartak’s possession game, and that is exactly how it unfolded. Spartak saw more of the ball in the first half but struggled to turn territory into clear chances. CSKA sat compact, pressed intelligently in midfield and looked dangerous whenever they broke forward through the wide areas.

After a tense opening hour, the home side found the breakthrough and then protected it with the kind of game management that has become a hallmark of their best performances this season. A second goal late in the match ended Spartak’s hopes of a comeback.

Key moments

• 54th minute: CSKA broke the deadlock after a quick transition, with a low finish from inside the penalty area beating the Spartak goalkeeper.
• 67th minute: Spartak’s best chance of the night arrived from a set piece, but a strong save kept the hosts ahead.
• 78th minute: CSKA doubled the lead on the counter, sealing the derby with a composed finish.
• Late pressure: Spartak pushed bodies forward, but CSKA’s back line held firm and limited clear sights of goal.

Tactical story

CSKA’s midfield block was the foundation of the win. By narrowing the central lanes and forcing Spartak to play sideways, the hosts made their rivals predictable. When possession was won, CSKA moved the ball forward quickly, targeting the space behind Spartak’s advanced full-backs. The approach was not overly elaborate, but it was effective and well executed.

Spartak will leave frustrated. They had spells of control but lacked penetration in the final third, and their defensive transitions were exposed twice in the second half. In a derby of this intensity, those small margins decide the result.

Standout performers

CSKA’s midfield duo set the tone with tireless running and smart positioning, while the goalkeeper produced the key save at 1-0. The forwards deserve credit for taking their chances in a match where clear opportunities were rare. For Spartak, the central defenders battled hard, but the team’s attacking players could not find the final pass.

Season impact

The win strengthens CSKA’s position in the Russian Premier League standings and gives them momentum ahead of a demanding run of fixtures. For Spartak, the defeat is a setback in the race for the European places and raises questions about their ability to break down well-organised opponents. The head-to-head record now swings back toward CSKA, and the derby bragging rights belong to the red-and-blue half of Moscow.
