Match Overview

Played under the lights in front of 4,500 fans, the match was a tactical battle early on. The opening goal came in the 34th minute when Nistor converted a penalty after Voluntari defender Igor Armaş handled the ball in the box.

Cluj doubled their lead in the 72nd minute. A quick counter-attack ended with Mamadou Thiam slotting past Voluntari goalkeeper Jesus Fernandez. Tactical Story

Cluj set up in a 4-2-3-1 with Nistor pulling the strings in the No. 10 role. They pressed intelligently, forcing Voluntari into long balls that were easily dealt with by centre-backs Andrei Miron and Bogdan Mitrea. Voluntari's 4-3-3 lacked width, and their full-backs were pinned back by Cluj's overlapping wingers.

The key difference was efficiency. Cluj had only 45% possession but registered 14 shots to Voluntari's 8. They also won 12 aerial duels to Voluntari's 6. Manager Ioan Ovidiu Sabău's side were content to sit on their lead after the second goal, and Voluntari's red card ended any hope of a comeback.

Standout Players

Dan Nistor (Universitatea Cluj) – The veteran midfielder was the best player on the pitch. He scored the opening goal, completed 89% of his passes, and made three key passes. His experience was vital in managing the game.

Mamadou Thiam (Universitatea Cluj) – The Senegalese striker was a constant threat. He won five duels, drew three fouls, and took his goal with real quality.

Andrei Gorcea (Universitatea Cluj) – The goalkeeper made four saves, including a crucial stop at 0-0, to keep a clean sheet.

Vitalie Damașcan (FC Voluntari) – The only bright spot for the hosts. He worked tirelessly but lacked support.

Romanian Super Liga Table Impact

With this win, Universitatea Cluj move to 14 points from eight matches, climbing to third place. They are now four points behind leaders FCSB and two behind second-placed CFR Cluj. Voluntari stay on 7 points, sitting 13th, just above the relegation play-off zone.

The result highlights Cluj's growing credentials as title outsiders. They have now scored in each of their last six matches and have kept three clean sheets in a row. Voluntari, meanwhile, have lost three of their last four and face a crucial trip to UTA Arad next weekend.
