FC Universitatea Cluj produced one of their most convincing displays of the Romanian Super Liga season on September 14, 2026, beating FC Otelul Galati 3-0 at Cluj Arena. The home side controlled the contest from the early exchanges, scored at key moments in each half, and protected their clean sheet with maturity, securing three valuable points in the race for the upper places in the standings.

Match overview

Universitatea Cluj entered the match looking to impose themselves on home turf, and they did exactly that. The hosts pressed high, moved the ball quickly through the midfield, and repeatedly found space behind Otelul Galati’s defensive line. Otelul Galati tried to stay compact and threaten on the counter, but they struggled to keep possession for long spells and were forced into defensive work for most of the evening.

Key moments

The match’s first decisive moment arrived in the 14th minute. Universitatea Cluj won the ball back in Otelul’s half and quickly worked it into the penalty area, where a clever run from the right side opened the scoring. The early goal settled the hosts and forced Otelul Galati to abandon their initial low block earlier than planned.

Universitatea doubled the lead in the 38th minute after a period of sustained pressure. A short corner routine caught Otelul’s defense ball-watching, and the subsequent cross was converted with a firm header from close range. That second goal gave the home side a comfortable halftime advantage and left the visitors with a difficult tactical puzzle to solve.

Any hopes of an Otelul comeback were effectively ended in the 67th minute. Universitatea Cluj broke forward at speed after a turnover in midfield, and the third goal was finished with composure after a one-two on the edge of the box. Otelul Galati’s goalkeeper made several saves to prevent a heavier defeat, but the visitors rarely looked like finding a route back into the match.

Tactical story

Universitatea Cluj set up in a flexible shape that allowed their full-backs to push high while the midfield rotated to cover the spaces behind. The home side dominated possession, circulated the ball with purpose, and consistently targeted the channels between Otelul’s center-backs and full-backs. Their pressing was coordinated rather than chaotic, forcing Otelul into long clearances and second-ball duels that Universitatea usually won.

Otelul Galati’s plan was built around defensive discipline and quick transitions. For the first 20 minutes, they managed to keep the game in front of them, but once Universitatea scored, the visitors had to step higher up the pitch. That change created more room for the hosts to attack, and Otelul’s midfield struggled to track runners arriving from deep. The third goal was a perfect example: a turnover, a fast vertical pass, and a finish that punished Otelul’s lack of recovery speed.

Defensively, Universitatea Cluj were rarely troubled. Their goalkeeper was called into action only a few times, and the back line dealt comfortably with crosses and set pieces. Otelul’s best moments came from isolated counterattacks, but the final pass was missing and the home side’s defensive shape remained intact until the final whistle.

Standout players

Several Universitatea Cluj players delivered strong individual performances. The midfield controller set the tempo throughout, winning back possession and linking defense with attack. The wide players stretched Otelul’s back line, while the center-forward’s movement created space for the supporting runners. The goalkeeper also deserves credit for a composed clean-sheet performance, even if his workload was limited.

• Universitatea Cluj midfield: controlled the rhythm, won second balls, and provided the assist for the third goal.
• Universitatea Cluj defense: kept a disciplined line, conceded few clear chances, and neutralized Otelul’s counterattacks.
• Otelul Galati goalkeeper: made multiple saves to keep the score from becoming more lopsided.
• Otelul Galati captain: tried to organize the team and drive forward, but received little support in the final third.

Season impact and table context

The 3-0 win gives Universitatea Cluj a significant boost in the Romanian Super Liga standings. Three points at home, combined with a clean sheet and a multi-goal margin, improve their goal difference and reinforce their credentials as a side capable of compet
