Corvinul Hunedoara 0-1 CS Universitatea Craiova: Mitriță Settles Tight Contest

CS Universitatea Craiova secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory away at Corvinul Hunedoara in the Romanian Super Liga on September 14, 2026. Alexandru Mitriță's second-half goal was enough to separate the sides in a match that was far more challenging than the scoreline suggests.

Craiova, one of Romania's most storied clubs, dominated possession for long spells but struggled to break down a disciplined and determined Corvinul defense. The home side, backed by a passionate crowd, defended deep and looked to hit on the counterattack. In the end, one moment of quality from Mitriță decided the contest.

Match Overview

Craiova lined up in a 4-3-3 formation, with Mitriță operating from the left wing and drifting inside to find space. Corvinul set up in a 5-4-1 defensive block, conceding possession but making it extremely difficult for Craiova to play through the middle. The visitors were forced to rely on crosses and long shots for much of the first half.

After the break, Craiova increased the tempo and pushed their full-backs higher. That pressure finally told in the 54th minute when Mitriță found a pocket of space at the edge of the box and curled a precise shot into the bottom corner. Corvinul had a few half-chances to equalize but could not find a way past Craiova's goalkeeper.

Key Moments

• 28th minute – Craiova's first big chance: Nicușor Bancu overlapped down the left and crossed for the striker, whose header was tipped over the bar.
• 54th minute – Mitriță breaks the deadlock: The winger received the ball on the edge of the box, shifted it onto his right foot, and curled a low shot beyond the diving goalkeeper.
• 72nd minute – Corvinul's best opportunity: A quick counterattack ended with a shot from the edge of the box that clipped the outside of the post.
• 89th minute – Craiova hold on: The visitors cleared a late corner and then kept the ball in the corner to see out the win.

Tactical Story

Corvinul's game plan was clear: defend deep, stay compact, and frustrate Craiova. For 53 minutes, it worked almost perfectly. Their back five limited space between the lines, and their midfielders tracked runners diligently. However, Craiova's patience and movement eventually created the one opening they needed.

Craiova's manager made a smart substitution on the hour mark, bringing on a fresh striker to occupy the center-backs and create more room for Mitriță. That change helped the visitors see out the game comfortably, even though they could not add a second goal.

Standout Players

Alexandru Mitriță was the difference-maker, not only for his goal but also for his constant movement and ability to beat defenders one-on-one. Nicușor Bancu was excellent going forward from left-back, providing width and quality deliveries. Craiova's goalkeeper made two important saves to preserve the clean sheet.

For Corvinul, the center-back pairing was outstanding, winning headers and making last-ditch blocks. Their goalkeeper also impressed with a string of saves that kept the score down. The home side's striker worked tirelessly but was isolated for much of the match.

Season Impact and Super Liga Context

This win keeps CS Universitatea Craiova in the hunt for European places and maintains their momentum in the Romanian Super Liga. For Corvinul Hunedoara, the defeat is a tough one to take, but their defensive organization suggests they can pick up points against teams around them in the standings.
