Sporting Liesti delivered one of the most emphatic results of the Romanian Liga III matchday, thrashing CS Gheorgheni 7-0 on 24 October 2026. The home side were relentless from the first whistle and produced a display full of sharp passing, aggressive pressing, and clinical finishing.

Match overview

Sporting Liesti opened the scoring in the sixth minute and never looked back. By half-time they had established a 3-0 lead, with CS Gheorgheni struggling to cope with the pace of the hosts’ attacking transitions. The second half turned into a rout as Liesti added four more goals, including a well-taken hat-trick from Andrei Popa. Gheorgheni, by contrast, were limited to a handful of half-chances and spent long periods defending inside their own half.

• 6’ — Andrei Popa opens the scoring with a low finish.
• 19’ — Mihai Ionescu doubles the lead after a quick passing sequence.
• 31’ — Cristian Dobre makes it 3-0 with a strong run from midfield.
• 52’ — Popa scores his second and Liesti’s fourth.

• 74’ — Popa completes his hat-trick.

Tactical story

Liesti’s pressing structure was the foundation of the win. They won the ball back quickly in midfield and immediately looked forward, catching Gheorgheni’s defence before it could reset. The hosts also dominated set-piece situations and second balls, which allowed them to sustain long spells of pressure. Gheorgheni attempted to defend in a compact block, but once the first two goals went in, the shape became increasingly difficult to maintain.

Standout performers

Andrei Popa was the obvious headline-maker with three goals, showing excellent movement in the box and composure in one-on-one situations. Mihai Ionescu’s brace highlighted his ability to arrive late in the penalty area, while Cristian Dobre controlled the tempo from midfield. For Gheorgheni, the goalkeeper made several saves to prevent an even heavier defeat, but the team’s overall defensive effort was overwhelmed.

Season impact

The seven-goal victory gives Sporting Liesti a major boost in goal difference and signals their attacking potential in Romanian Liga III. Such a dominant home performance can be a turning point in a campaign, both in terms of confidence and momentum. For CS Gheorgheni, the result is a difficult lesson, but the focus will quickly shift to tightening their defensive organisation in the next fixture.
