FC Maramures Baia Mare made the long trip to Cluj and came away with a thoroughly professional 2-0 victory over CS Sanatatea Cluj on 22 September 2026, a result that strengthens their position in the Romanian Liga III table and extends their reputation as one of the more organised sides in the division.

Match Overview

Matches between teams from the Cluj and Maramures regions always carry a little extra weight, and this one followed the classic script of a well-drilled away side dismantling a home team that struggled to convert territory into chances. Sanatatea Cluj had spells of possession and a decent amount of the ball in the middle third, but the final pass was consistently missing. Baia Mare, by contrast, were compact, disciplined and dangerous whenever they won the ball back.

Two goals were enough, and in truth Baia Mare never looked like surrendering control of the contest after taking the lead.

Key Moments

• Early pressure: Sanatatea Cluj began the brighter of the two, winning a series of throw-ins in the attacking half and forcing Baia Mare to defend deep.
• Opening goal: Baia Mare struck first against the run of play, finishing calmly after a quick transition caught the home midfield too far up the pitch.
• Saved by the woodwork: Sanatatea Cluj came closest to responding before the break, only for their effort to be cleared off the line as Baia Mare scrambled clear.
• Second goal: A set-piece routine early in the second half effectively settled the match, with the visiting defenders timing their runs perfectly to double the advantage.
• Closing out: The final half-hour became a disciplined defensive exercise, with Baia Mare conceding almost nothing of substance.

Tactical Story

Baia Mare set up in a mid-block that invited Sanatatea Cluj to build slowly and then squeezed them as soon as the ball entered the middle third. That structure meant the home side's centre-backs had plenty of the ball but very few progressive options. When Sanatatea did manage to get into wide areas, the crosses were dealt with comfortably by a physically strong visiting back line.

Going forward, Baia Mare were direct and efficient. Their transitions were the defining feature of the match: win the ball, move it forward in two or three passes, and attack the space before the opposition could recover shape. Both goals came from exactly that template, and it is a pattern that has served them well throughout the campaign.

Standout Performers

The Baia Mare goalkeeper was rarely called into spectacular action but was reliable on crosses and calm with the ball at his feet, setting the tone for a composed team performance. Further up the pitch, the visiting midfield pair controlled the rhythm of the game, breaking up attacks and then launching counters with intelligent forward passes.

For CS Sanatatea Cluj, the responsibility fell heavily on their captain, who tried to drive the team forward from deep and was involved in most of their better moments. The lack of a genuine centre-forward presence in the box, however, was the difference between an encouraging display and a result.

What It Means in the Table

A 2-0 away win of this nature is worth more than the raw three points. It is the kind of result that builds a season: clean sheet, no injuries, no drama, and the squad managing the game intelligently. FC Maramures Baia Mare will take confidence from it as they push for a high finish in Liga III.

For Sanatatea Cluj, the challenge now is finding goals. Defensively they were not embarrassed, but a home defeat without scoring puts pressure on the attacking unit to deliver in the next round of fixtures. The Liga III standings remain tight, and a quick response would settle any nerves among the supporters.
