Rio Ave 0-4 FC Famalicao: FC Famalicão produced one of the most emphatic away performances of the Portuguese Primeira Liga season, dismantling Rio Ave with four unanswered goals at the Estádio dos Arcos. A brace from Rafael Tavares, plus strikes from Matheus Alves and Diogo Nunes, gave the visitors a statement victory and left the hosts with serious questions to answer.

Famalicão take control early

From the opening whistle, Famalicão pressed high and forced Rio Ave into hurried clearances. The visitors won the midfield battle through Matheus Alves and Diogo Nunes, while the front line constantly attacked the space behind Rio Ave’s full-backs. The breakthrough arrived in the 12th minute when Tavares latched onto a clever through ball and finished low across the goalkeeper.

Rio Ave briefly threatened an response, with a header clipping the top of the crossbar, but the home side struggled to sustain possession. Famalicão doubled their advantage in the 38th minute when Alves arrived late in the box to convert a cut-back from the right. The second goal drained confidence from the hosts and gave the visitors a comfortable half-time cushion.

Key moments

• 12’ – Goal, Rafael Tavares: A quick transition and a composed low finish put Famalicão ahead.
• 38’ – Goal, Matheus Alves: A flowing move down the right ended with a simple tap-in.
• 57’ – Goal, Diogo Nunes: A powerful strike from the edge of the area made it 3-0 after Rio Ave failed to clear a corner.
• 82’ – Goal, Rafael Tavares: The forward sealed his brace with a calm finish on the counter-attack.

Tactical story

Famalicão’s 4-2-3-1 shape was built for quick transitions. The two holding midfielders protected the back line, while the wide players stretched Rio Ave’s defence and created room for Tavares to attack central spaces. Rio Ave attempted to build from the back, but repeated turnovers allowed Famalicão to counter in dangerous numbers.

After half-time, Rio Ave switched to a back three in an attempt to find more width, but the change left gaps in midfield. Famalicão’s third goal came directly from that space, and the visitors managed the final half-hour with maturity, slowing the tempo and protecting their clean sheet.

Standout players

Rafael Tavares was the obvious match-winner, combining sharp movement with clinical finishing. Matheus Alves controlled the tempo and contributed a goal, while Diogo Nunes was relentless in both pressing and distribution. For Rio Ave, goalkeeper Gonçalo Silva made several saves to prevent an even heavier defeat, but the defensive unit in front of him struggled throughout.

What it means for the Primeira Liga table

The result lifts Famalicão into the European qualification conversation and strengthens their reputation as one of the league’s most dangerous counter-attacking sides. For Rio Ave, the defeat leaves them hovering dangerously close to the relegation zone and increases pressure on the coaching staff. The Primeira Liga standings now make uncomfortable reading for the hosts, while Famalicão can look upward with genuine ambition.

Famalicão’s 4-0 win was more than a routine away victory. It was a demonstration of precision, patience and ruthless finishing — and a warning to the rest of the division.
