Portimonense U23 1-2 Académico de Viseu U23 — Académico de Viseu U23 left the Algarve with all three points on 13 October 2026, edging Portimonense U23 in a 2-1 away victory in the Portuguese U23 League. The visitors were sharper in the decisive moments, scoring either side of the interval to overturn an early setback and hand the home side a frustrating evening at the Estádio Municipal de Portimão.

Match Overview

Played under the lights with an 18:00 kick-off, the contest followed a familiar pattern for this level of Portuguese youth football: plenty of energy, quick transitions and a home side that wanted to impose itself early. Portimonense U23 started with intent, pressing high and looking to get their wide players involved, and their aggression was rewarded when they opened the scoring during a bright opening spell.

Yet the momentum shifted before half-time. Académico de Viseu U23, always organised and rarely rushed in possession, drew level and then took control of the tempo after the restart. The winning goal arrived in the second half, and from there the visitors defended their advantage with a discipline that Portimonense could not break down.

Key Moments That Decided the Game

• Portimonense's opener: The home side's early pressure paid off, with a well-worked move down the right ending in a finish that beat the Viseu goalkeeper at his near post.
• Viseu's equaliser: The response came from a set-piece situation, an area where the visitors had already threatened, and it changed the mood of the match completely.
• The winner: A quick turnover in midfield allowed Viseu to attack a retreating defence, and the second goal arrived from a low, composed finish inside the box.
• Late pressure: Portimonense pushed bodies forward in the final 15 minutes, but the away back line held firm, clearing crosses and slowing the game down intelligently.

Tactical Story

Portimonense U23 lined up with a high defensive line and looked to squeeze the space in midfield, an approach that worked well for the first half-hour. The problem was the space it left behind. Once Académico de Viseu U23 began playing longer, more direct passes into the channels, the home defence found itself turned repeatedly.

Viseu's midfield trio was the difference. They won second balls consistently and kept the ball moving with purpose rather than possession for its own sake, and their ability to switch play from one flank to the other stretched Portimonense's shape. In the closing stages, the visitors dropped into a compact block that forced the Algarve side into hopeful deliveries rather than clear chances.

Standout Performers

For the winners, the central defenders were excellent — dominant in the air and calm under late pressure — while the attacking midfielder who drove the second-half counterattacks was the creative spark throughout. Portimonense's brightest contributions came from their wide players, who consistently beat their markers but too often lacked a target in the box. Their goalkeeper also made two important saves that kept the scoreline respectable.

What It Means for the Table

Three points on the road are especially valuable in the Portuguese U23 League, where the schedule is congested and away fixtures against fellow development sides are often the difference between challenging near the top and slipping into mid-table. Académico de Viseu U23 will take confidence from a win built on resilience rather than luck, while Portimonense U23 will be frustrated at another result that got away after a promising start — a recurring theme that the coaching staff will want corrected quickly.

For Portimonense, the lesson is about game management: converting early dominance into a two-goal cushion before the opposition settles. For Viseu, it is proof that their patient, structured style travels well.

Up Next

Both sides return to league action with plenty to work on. Portimonense U23 need points from their next home fixture to steady their campaign, while Académico de Viseu U23 will look to build on this away win and turn it into a run of form as the season moves deeper into autumn.
