Marítimo U23 produced one of their most convincing away performances of the Portuguese U23 League season on Monday night, beating Braga U23 3-1 at the Cidade Desportiva do SC Braga. The visitors recovered from conceding the opening goal to score three unanswered strikes, turning a tense contest into a comfortable victory in the closing half-hour.

The result hands Marítimo a valuable three points on the road against one of the more technically gifted academies in northern Portugal, while Braga are left to reflect on a night when their early control slipped away after the interval.

Match Overview

• Competition: Portuguese U23 League
• Fixture: Braga U23 vs Marítimo U23
• Date: 12 October 2026, 22:00 kick-off
• Final score: Braga U23 1-3 Marítimo U23

Braga started the brighter of the two sides, pressing high and forcing Marítimo into a series of hurried clearances. The home team's reward arrived midway through the first period when a well-worked move down the right ended with a composed finish inside the penalty area, sending the Arsenalistas' bench to their feet.

How the Match Turned

The goal did not deflate Marítimo. Instead, the islanders tightened their midfield shape, dropped their wingers deeper to block Braga's progression through the half-spaces and began to win the ball in more advanced positions. That adjustment paid off before the break, when a turnover in the middle third led to a quick, direct counter that levelled the score at 1-1.

From that moment the contest changed character. Braga continued to see more of the ball, but their possession became increasingly sterile, with crosses repeatedly cleared by a Marítimo back line that grew in confidence as the second half wore on. The visitors' second goal arrived after a sustained spell of pressure, a low driven effort from the edge of the box that beat the goalkeeper at his near post.

With Braga chasing an equaliser, spaces opened up and Marítimo killed the game with a third goal on the counter, finishing clinically after a lung-busting run from midfield. The final whistle confirmed a scoreline that flattered the visitors slightly, but rewarded their ruthlessness in front of goal.

Tactical Story

The match was a classic case of efficiency beating volume. Braga dominated possession and territory for long stretches, but their attacking play was often too narrow and too slow, allowing Marítimo to set their defensive block and frustrate the hosts. Marítimo, by contrast, were happy to concede the ball and attack in transition, using the pace of their wide players to stretch a Braga defence that pushed higher and higher as the game progressed.

Set-pieces also proved important. Marítimo's physical presence in both boxes gave them an edge in the aerial duels, and their ability to defend corners with discipline kept Braga's most dangerous weapon under control.

Standout Performers

Marítimo's central midfield pair dictated the tempo of their counters, breaking up play and then releasing runners quickly. Their centre-forward, tireless in his pressing, was involved in two of the three goals. For Braga, the brightest spark was their left-sided attacker, who created several half-chances with direct running before fading as the game became stretched.

What It Means for the Table

For Braga U23, this is a costly home defeat in a competition where dropped points at the Cidade Desportiva are rare. It leaves them playing catch-up in the upper half of the standings and adds pressure to their upcoming away fixtures. Marítimo U23, meanwhile, take a significant confidence boost from a road win against a strong academy side, strengthening their position in the mid-to-upper region of the table and underlining their reputation as one of the league's most dangerous counter-attacking teams.
