Sanjoanense claimed a memorable 1-0 victory over Nacional da Madeira in the Portuguese Cup, with Rui Pinheiro’s second-half header securing a famous cup upset. The home side defended heroically under late pressure and produced the kind of disciplined, organised performance that cup football rewards.

Match overview

Nacional da Madeira started as favourites and enjoyed long spells of possession, but Sanjoanense were well drilled from the first whistle. The hosts sat deep, kept their shape and looked to spring counter-attacks through the wide areas. Nacional created the better chances in the first half, but Sanjoanense’s goalkeeper made two important saves to keep the score level at the break.

The breakthrough came in the 78th minute. Sanjoanense won a corner on the left, and Rui Pinheiro rose powerfully at the near post to glance a header into the far corner. The goal sparked wild celebrations and forced Nacional to commit even more players forward. The visitors threw crosses into the box and had a strong penalty appeal waved away in stoppage time, but Sanjoanense survived to record a famous win.

Key moments

• 22’ – Sanjoanense goalkeeper saves: A low drive from outside the box is pushed around the post.
• 54’ – Nacional miss a big chance: A header from a cross goes narrowly wide.
• 78’ – Sanjoanense score: Rui Pinheiro heads home from a corner to make it 1-0.
• 88’ – Desperate defending: Sanjoanense block two shots in quick succession inside the box.
• 90+4’ – Final whistle: The hosts clear one last cross and secure their place in the next round.

Tactical story

Sanjoanense’s game plan was clear: defend in a compact block, deny Nacional space in central areas and rely on set pieces for goals. Their midfield worked hard to track runners, and the back line stayed connected, forcing Nacional to play sideways for long periods. The hosts also defended corners and free kicks well, which was crucial against a team with plenty of height and physical presence.

Nacional dominated possession but lacked urgency in the final third. Their wide players delivered several crosses, yet Sanjoanense’s defenders consistently cleared the danger. When Nacional did find space, their finishing was wayward. The decisive difference was Sanjoanense’s efficiency from a set piece and their refusal to panic during the late onslaught.

Standout players

Rui Pinheiro was the match-winner with a superb header, but the goalkeeper’s first-half saves kept Sanjoanense in the tie. The centre-backs were outstanding in the air and made a series of crucial blocks in the closing stages. The midfield captain also deserves credit for organising the team and keeping discipline when Nacional increased the pressure.

For Nacional da Madeira, the attacking players showed effort but lacked sharpness in front of goal. Their best moments came from crosses and set pieces, but they could not find a way past a determined defensive unit.

What the result means

Sanjoanense progress to the next round of the Portuguese Cup and can take huge confidence from beating higher-ranked opposition. The result also highlights the value of organisation and set-piece quality in knockout football. Nacional da Madeira must now turn their attention back to league duties, where they will need to be more clinical after a frustrating cup exit.
