Recreativa de Lamelas 0-1 Vitoria Guimaraes: Primeira Liga Side Survive Portuguese Cup Scare

Vitoria Guimaraes edged past Recreativa de Lamelas with a 1-0 victory in the Portuguese Cup on 17 October 2026, avoiding a major upset against their lower-league hosts. In a 21:00 kickoff, a single second-half goal settled a tie in which Lamelas defended with organisation and forced the Primeira Liga side to work hard for their place in the next round.

Match overview

Recreativa de Lamelas set up to be compact, denying Vitoria Guimaraes space in central areas and forcing the visitors wide. The hosts defended deep but with discipline, and their goalkeeper was called into action several times during a first half in which Vitoria controlled possession without finding a breakthrough.

The decisive moment arrived after the break. Vitoria increased the tempo, moved the ball more quickly and finally found a gap in the Lamelas defence. The goal gave the Primeira Liga side the lead, but it did not end the contest. Lamelas responded with fresh energy and had moments of their own, though they could not find an equaliser. Vitoria managed the closing stages calmly and secured a narrow but important cup win.

Key moments

• Early pressure: Vitoria Guimaraes dominated the ball but found Lamelas’ defensive block difficult to break down.
• Second-half breakthrough: The visitors scored the only goal of the game after moving the ball quickly into the penalty area.
• Lamelas response: The home side pushed forward and delivered several crosses, forcing Vitoria to defend with concentration.
• Late save: A crucial stop from the Vitoria goalkeeper preserved the clean sheet and the victory.

Tactical story

The tactical contrast was clear. Lamelas wanted to limit space, slow the game down and rely on set pieces and counter-attacks. Vitoria Guimaraes wanted to impose their technical superiority, use width and create overloads in the final third. For long periods, the lower-league side’s plan worked.

The difference came in Vitoria’s ability to raise the tempo after half-time. Their midfield began to play through the lines more aggressively, and the winning goal came from exactly that kind of patience and movement. Lamelas can take credit from their organisation, but the cup run ends with a narrow defeat against professional opposition.

Standout players

Recreativa de Lamelas’ goalkeeper was the standout performer for the hosts, making a series of saves and commanding his area well. Vitoria Guimaraes’ match-winner deserved credit for finding the decisive finish in a crowded penalty area, while the visiting midfield’s control in the second half helped prevent a nervy ending.

What the result means

Vitoria Guimaraes progress in the Portuguese Cup, but the performance was far from comfortable and will serve as a warning against underestimating lower-league opposition. For Recreativa de Lamelas, the result is a narrow defeat against a top-flight club, and the display should give the players confidence for their league campaign.
