Penafiel 0-1 Leca delivered a classic Portuguese Cup upset on 18 October 2026, as the visitors produced a disciplined defensive performance and struck in the second half to knock Penafiel out of the Taça de Portugal. Leca defended with organization, took their decisive chance, and survived late pressure to secure a memorable away win.

Match overview

Penafiel controlled much of the ball and looked the more ambitious side in the opening stages, but they struggled to break down a compact Leca block. The visitors were content to defend deep, close the central areas, and threaten on the counter. That approach worked perfectly: Leca stayed patient, limited Penafiel to half-chances, and then found the breakthrough after the interval.

Once ahead, Leca defended their lead with real determination. Penafiel increased the tempo and pushed more players into the box, but the visitors’ goalkeeper and centre-backs held firm. The final stages were tense, with Penafiel throwing crosses into the area, but Leca cleared every dangerous ball and saw out the result.

Key moments

• 14th minute – Penafiel’s early chance: A header from a right-wing cross drifted just wide as the hosts looked to impose themselves early.
• 39th minute – Leca warning: Rui Faria broke into space on the counter but saw his low shot saved by the Penafiel goalkeeper.
• 63rd minute – Opening goal: Rui Faria found the bottom corner from the edge of the box after a loose ball fell to him following a cleared corner.
• 79th minute – Crucial save: André Sousa produced a strong one-handed stop to deny Penafiel an equaliser from close range.
• 90+5 minute – Final clearance: Leca’s captain headed a late cross away from danger as the visitors secured the win.

Tactical story

Leca set up in a deep 5-4-1 shape without the ball and made it difficult for Penafiel to find space between the lines. The wing-backs stayed narrow, the midfield screened the back three, and Penafiel were forced into hopeful crosses rather than clear openings. Leca’s discipline was the foundation of the result.

Penafiel had width and territory but lacked rhythm in the final third. Their best moments came from set pieces and second balls, but Leca defended those situations well. When the visitors won possession, they looked to release Rui Faria into the channels, and that outlet gave them a way to relieve pressure. The goal came from exactly that kind of scrappy, hard-fought moment rather than a sustained spell of control.

Standout performers

André Sousa was the hero in the Leca goal, making the decisive save at 1-0 and commanding his box under late pressure. Rui Faria’s energy and finishing gave Leca their match-winning edge, while the centre-back trio stayed composed as Penafiel pushed forward. For Penafiel, Miguel Costa was the most inventive midfielder, but the hosts lacked a final product despite their possession.

Cup impact

The win sends Leca into the next round of the Portuguese Cup and gives the club a major confidence boost. For Penafiel, the defeat is a disappointing knockout blow, but the league campaign now becomes the clear priority. Cup ties are often decided by fine margins, and Leca’s organization, goalkeeping, and willingness to defend their lead made the difference in a result that will be remembered as one of the round’s notable upsets.
