Rio Ave avoided a Portuguese Cup upset with a narrow 1-0 victory away to Louletano, settling a tense cup tie with a single second-half goal. The Primeira Liga side had to work far harder than the scoreline suggests, as Louletano defended with discipline and threatened enough on the counter to keep the result in doubt until the final whistle.

Match overview

Louletano set up to frustrate from the opening minutes, keeping a compact defensive block and forcing Rio Ave to circulate the ball patiently. The visitors controlled possession but struggled to find clear openings in the first half, with several crosses cleared and a handful of long-range efforts drifting off target. The breakthrough eventually arrived after the interval, when Rio Ave increased the tempo and found space behind Louletano’s deep line. Once ahead, the top-flight side managed the game professionally, though a late set piece gave the home crowd one final moment of hope.

Key moments

• 18th minute: Louletano’s first counter-attack ended with a low shot from the edge of the box that forced Rio Ave’s goalkeeper into a comfortable save.
• 41st minute: Rio Ave’s best chance of the first half came from a corner, but a header flashed just wide of the far post.
• 63rd minute: The decisive goal arrived when Rio Ave worked the ball into the penalty area and Diogo Pereira finished calmly from close range.
• 84th minute: Louletano sent a free kick into a crowded box, but Rio Ave’s defence cleared the danger.
• 90+3 minutes: A final Louletano cross was gathered safely as Rio Ave closed out the win.

Tactical story

Rio Ave’s challenge was always going to be about patience. Louletano sat deep, denied central spaces and asked the visitors to create from wide areas. That approach worked for long spells, but Rio Ave’s increased urgency after half-time made the difference. The introduction of fresher legs in attack stretched Louletano’s back line, and the goal came from exactly the kind of quick combination play the home side had managed to prevent earlier.

Standout performers

Diogo Pereira took the decisive chance and was the game’s most important attacking figure. Rio Ave’s goalkeeper also deserves credit for concentration, making the saves required and commanding his area late on. For Louletano, the centre-back pairing produced a committed display, winning headers and blocking shots until the decisive moment.

What the result means

Rio Ave move into the next round of the Portuguese Cup, but the performance will serve as a reminder that cup football rewards intensity as much as reputation. Louletano exit with credit after pushing a higher-ranked opponent all the way, while Rio Ave can take confidence from a clean sheet and a professional away result.
