GD Chaves 2-1 Marialvas — GD Chaves avoided a cup upset with a battling victory over lower-league Marialvas, but they were made to work hard for their place in the next round of the Portuguese Cup after a spirited second-half fightback from the visitors.

Match Overview

Cup ties between professional sides and lower-division opponents are supposed to be straightforward, but Marialvas had clearly not read the script. The underdogs defended in numbers, broke with purpose, and pulled a goal back to set up a nervy closing period in which Chaves had to dig deep to protect their narrow advantage.

• Competition: Portuguese Cup (Taça de Portugal)
• Final score: GD Chaves 2-1 Marialvas
• Result: GD Chaves progress to the next round
• Format: Knockout tie

How Chaves Won It

Chaves began the match on the front foot, dominating possession and forcing Marialvas into a deep defensive block. The opening goal came from a patient build-up down the left, with a low cross converted at the near post after a smart run across the defender.

The second arrived before the break and looked to have settled the tie. A quick transition caught Marialvas stretched, and a composed finish from the edge of the area made it 2-0. At that stage, the game looked comfortable.

But cup football has a habit of biting back. Marialvas emerged for the second half with far more ambition, pushed their wing-backs higher and began to win free-kicks in dangerous areas. Their reward came from a well-struck effort that halved the deficit and turned the closing half-hour into a genuine contest.

Key Moments

• First goal: A left-sided move finished at the near post put Chaves ahead.
• Second goal: A rapid counter-attack doubled the lead before half-time.
• Lifeline: Marialvas pulled one back with a fine strike from outside the box.
• Pressure: The visitors forced three corners in quick succession as they pushed for an equaliser.
• Relief: Chaves saw out five minutes of added time to seal progression.

Tactical Story

Chaves set up to control the game through midfield and use width to stretch a compact opponent. For 45 minutes it worked perfectly, but their intensity dropped noticeably after the interval, and Marialvas took full advantage by pressing higher and forcing turnovers in the middle third.

The introduction of fresh legs in central areas helped Chaves regain a measure of control in the final twenty minutes. Their game management from that point — slowing the tempo, keeping the ball near the corners, and defending crosses properly — was the difference between progress and embarrassment.

Standout Performers

Chaves' attacking midfielder was the most creative presence on the pitch, involved in both goals and constantly finding pockets of space between the lines. The goalkeeper also made one excellent save late on, at a moment when an equaliser would have completely changed the mood.

For Marialvas, the goalscorer and the captain in midfield stood out. Their willingness to keep pushing forward despite being two goals down said a great deal about the character of the squad.

Cup Context

The Portuguese Cup remains one of the most romantic competitions in European football, famous for giving smaller clubs the chance to test themselves against professional opposition. Nights like this — where an unfancied side pushes a league club all the way — are exactly why the tournament retains its appeal.

What's Next

Chaves move into the next round and will hope for a kinder draw, though the manner of this performance will give the coaching staff plenty to analyse. Marialvas exit with their reputation enhanced and can return to league duty with confidence that they can compete against stronger opposition.
