AVS Futebol SAD advanced in the Portuguese Cup with a narrow 1-0 victory over Moreirense on Saturday, 17 October 2026. A single second-half goal settled a tight cup tie, sending AVS through and leaving Moreirense to reflect on a night of missed opportunities.

The first half was cagey, with both teams cautious about committing too many players forward. Moreirense had more of the ball, but AVS defended with discipline and limited clear sights of goal. The home side looked dangerous on the counterattack and won several corners, suggesting that a set piece might be the most likely source of a breakthrough.

Match overview

The decisive moment came in the 58th minute. AVS worked the ball into the penalty area, and Rodrigo Figueiredo found enough space to strike past the goalkeeper. The goal energised the home crowd and forced Moreirense to take more risks. The visitors pushed more players forward, but AVS dropped into a compact shape and protected their lead well.

Moreirense had late chances, including a header that flashed wide and a shot from distance that forced a save. However, AVS survived the pressure and managed the closing minutes intelligently, keeping possession in wide areas and forcing their opponents to chase the game.

Key moments

• 58th minute: Rodrigo Figueiredo scores the only goal of the game for AVS.
• 67th minute: Moreirense introduce fresh attacking options in search of an equaliser.
• 79th minute: AVS goalkeeper makes a strong save to deny a close-range effort.
• 90th minute: AVS clear a late corner and see out the win.

Tactical story

AVS were happy to concede possession in midfield and defend in a mid-block, relying on quick transitions to create chances. That approach worked perfectly after they took the lead, as Moreirense struggled to find gaps in a well-organised back line. The home team’s discipline without the ball was the foundation of the result.

Moreirense will feel they had enough of the ball to create more, but their final pass was often hurried. AVS’s ability to defend crosses and protect the central area made the difference in a match where clear chances were always likely to be limited.

Standout performers

Rodrigo Figueiredo deserves the headlines for the winning goal, but AVS’s goalkeeper was equally important with a crucial second-half save. The centre-back pairing also stood firm under late pressure. For Moreirense, the midfield worked hard to keep the team moving forward, but the attacking line lacked the finishing touch on the night.

Portuguese Cup impact

The win sends AVS into the next round of the Portuguese Cup and adds another positive result to their season. Cup football rewards teams that defend well and take their chances, and AVS did both. Moreirense exit with frustration, but their performance showed enough to suggest they will respond in league competition.
