Associação Naval 1893 0-2 FC Felgueiras — FC Felgueiras progressed to the next round of the Portuguese Cup with a professional 2-0 victory over Associação Naval 1893 on Saturday evening. Two second-half goals settled a competitive tie, and the visitors' superior fitness and squad depth eventually proved decisive against a determined Naval side.

Match Overview

Cup football in Portugal routinely delivers drama, and Naval 1893, with their proud history and passionate supporters, were hoping for another memorable night. Felgueiras, though, arrived with a clear plan: control the ball, remain patient, and wait for the gaps to appear. That approach paid off after the interval as they scored twice to end the hosts' resistance.

The match was played at a brisk pace, with Naval pressing energetically in the first half before Felgueiras's greater quality on the ball gradually took its toll. Once the first goal went in, the visitors never looked likely to surrender their advantage.

How the Game Unfolded

Naval 1893 began the match with real intensity, closing down Felgueiras's midfielders and forcing a number of hurried passes. Their best moment of the first half came from a quick counter-attack, but the final shot was dragged wide. At the other end, Felgueiras probed patiently, working the ball from side to side and looking for an opening.

The deadlock was broken early in the second half. A cleverly worked move down the left ended with a cross to the back post, and Felgueiras's winger volleyed home to make it 1-0. The goal changed the complexion of the game, forcing Naval to chase an equaliser and leaving space in behind.

Felgueiras exploited that space ruthlessly. A quick counter-attack saw them double their lead, with a composed finish after a driving run from midfield. Naval pushed forward in the closing stages, but the visitors' defence remained calm and organised, securing a clean sheet to go with the win.

Key Moments

• Naval's early counter — a promising break ended with a shot wide of the post.
• The opening goal — a back-post volley that broke Naval's resistance shortly after half-time.
• Felgueiras's second — a swift counter-attack finished with real composure.
• A goal-line clearance — Felgueiras defended desperately to preserve their clean sheet.
• Late Naval pressure — a series of crosses dealt with comfortably by the visiting defence.

Tactical Story

Naval 1893 adopted an energetic 4-4-2 that pressed high in the first half, aiming to disrupt Felgueiras's rhythm and force turnovers in dangerous areas. The strategy worked initially, but it also drained energy, and as the game wore on the hosts found it increasingly difficult to maintain their intensity.

Felgueiras set up with a patient 4-2-3-1, content to circulate possession and wait for mistakes. They targeted the space behind Naval's full-backs, and both goals came from moves that exploited that weakness. Defensively, they were well-drilled, holding a compact shape and dealing with crosses without panic.

Standout Players

Felgueiras's winger was the standout performer, scoring the opening goal and then turning provider for the second with a driving run. Their holding midfielder controlled the tempo and won back possession on numerous occasions. For Naval 1893, the goalkeeper made several important saves to keep the score down, while the striker worked tirelessly but received little service in the second half.

What the Result Means

FC Felgueiras move on in the Portuguese Cup with a solid, professional away win. They will take confidence from the clean sheet and the manner in which they managed the game after taking the lead. For Associação Naval 1893, the result brings an end to their cup campaign, but their first-half display showed they can compete with higher-ranked opposition. Attention now turns back to their respective league commitments.
