Sousense 1-3 Estrela da Calheta: Clinical Visitors Seal Impressive Away Win

Estrela da Calheta produced one of the standout away performances of the Campeonato Nacional matchday, defeating Sousense 3-1 on Sunday night. The visitors from Madeira were sharper in the final third, more compact in midfield and fully deserving of the three points.

Sousense had moments of promise, particularly during a bright spell after the interval, but they were punished for defensive lapses and struggled to contain Estrela da Calheta’s quick attacking transitions.

Match Overview

Estrela da Calheta made the better start and took the lead inside the opening 20 minutes, capitalising on a misplaced pass and converting with real composure. Sousense responded with energy and managed to equalise before half-time, giving the home supporters hope of a positive result.

However, the second half belonged to the visitors. Estrela da Calheta restored their advantage shortly after the restart and then added a third goal late on to put the result beyond doubt. The scoreline reflected their efficiency rather than total dominance, but there was no question about the quality of their finishing.

Key Moments

• 17th minute: Estrela da Calheta take the lead after a high press forces a turnover.
• 41st minute: Sousense equalise with a well-placed header from a cross.
• 52nd minute: Estrela da Calheta restore their lead with a low strike from the edge of the box.
• 78th minute: A rapid counter-attack ends with the visitors scoring their third goal.
• 86th minute: Sousense push forward but are denied by a smart save from the Estrela goalkeeper.

Tactical Story

Estrela da Calheta lined up with a disciplined midfield block and looked to spring forward whenever Sousense committed players ahead of the ball. Their front players were relentless in pressing the centre-backs, and that pressure directly created the opening goal. When they needed to slow the game down, they circulated possession confidently.

Sousense tried to build through the middle, but too often their final pass was rushed or over-hit. They did find joy down the left flank in the first half and deserved their equaliser, yet they left gaps when chasing the game after the break. Estrela da Calheta’s ability to exploit those gaps proved decisive.

Standout Performers

Estrela da Calheta’s centre-forward was a constant menace, scoring twice and linking play intelligently. Their midfield anchor also deserves credit for breaking up attacks and starting counters. For Sousense, the left winger was their most creative outlet, while the goalkeeper kept the score respectable with a string of second-half saves.

Campeonato Nacional Impact

Estrela da Calheta leave with momentum and a valuable away victory that strengthens their position in the upper half of the table. Sousense remain in search of consistency and will need to tighten up defensively if they are to climb the standings. The result also serves as a warning to other sides about Estrela’s counter-attacking quality.
