Dezembro claimed a narrow 1-0 victory over Vitoria Setubal in the Portuguese Campeonato Nacional on Sunday night, with a late goal from Rúben Alves proving enough to separate two sides that battled through a tight, tactical contest.

Match overview

Dezembro set up with a compact shape and looked content to let Vitoria Setubal have the ball in deeper areas, banking on quick transitions and set pieces to create the decisive moment. The visitors enjoyed more possession in the first half but struggled to turn that control into clear chances, often running into a well-organised defensive block.

The game remained balanced after the break, with both teams cautious about committing too many bodies forward. As the clock moved past the 70-minute mark, the match seemed destined for a draw, but Dezembro found the breakthrough when Alves finished off a low cross from the right after a patient build-up.

Key moments

• 18': Vitoria Setubal’s first real sight of goal came from a long-range effort that Dezembro goalkeeper Tiago Ferreira held comfortably.
• 34': Dezembro threatened from a corner, but the header flashed wide of the far post.
• 52': Setubal created their best chance of the night, only for a goal-bound header to be cleared off the line.
• 76': Rúben Alves scored the only goal, sweeping the ball in from close range after a sharp move down the right.
• 88': Setubal pushed numbers forward in search of an equaliser, but Dezembro’s defence held firm under late pressure.

Tactical story

Dezembro’s discipline without the ball was the foundation of the win. The hosts stayed compact through the middle, forced Setubal into wide areas and then defended crosses with real determination. When they won possession, they looked to move the ball forward quickly rather than overcomplicate things in midfield.

Vitoria Setubal will feel they had enough territory to take something from the match, but their final ball lacked precision. They were patient in possession but often slow to shift the ball into dangerous pockets, allowing Dezembro to reset defensively and protect the central areas.

Standout performers

Alves took his goal well and was a constant outlet in the second half, while Ferreira produced an assured goalkeeping display for Dezembro. In front of him, the centre-back pairing dealt with a steady stream of crosses and long balls. For Setubal, the midfield work rate was impressive, but the attacking line lacked the sharpness needed to break down a stubborn opponent.

What the result means

The three points give Dezembro a valuable lift in the Portuguese Campeonato Nacional standings and reinforce their ability to win tight home games. For Vitoria Setubal, the result is a frustrating one: they showed control for long spells but were undone by the sort of decisive moment that has been missing from their recent away performances. Both sides now turn their attention to the next round, with Dezembro keen to build momentum and Setubal looking to convert possession into points.
