Sportivo Ameliano 2-3 Olimpia Asuncion — Olimpia Asuncion edged a five-goal thriller against Sportivo Ameliano in the Paraguayan Primera Division, winning 3-2 after a tense and end-to-end contest at Estadio Luis Alfonso Giagni.

Match overview

Olimpia Asuncion started strongly and took the lead through Gustavo Velázquez’s composed finish in the 14th minute. Sportivo Ameliano responded well, equalising midway through the first half through Rodrigo Amarilla. Olimpia regained the advantage just before half-time when Cristian Colmán struck, but Ameliano refused to fade and levelled again after the break through Diego Valdez.

The game appeared to be heading for a draw until Alejandro Quiñónez found space on the edge of the box and curled home the winner in the 84th minute. It was a cruel ending for Ameliano, who matched their more decorated opponents for long spells, but Olimpia’s quality in the decisive moments proved the difference.

Key moments

• 14th minute: Olimpia’s early pressure told when Velázquez converted from close range after a flowing move.
• 31st minute: Amarilla equalised for Sportivo Ameliano with a low shot across the goalkeeper.
• 45+2nd minute: Colmán restored Olimpia’s lead with a header from a corner.
• 67th minute: Valdez finished off a quick Ameliano counterattack to make it 2-2.
• 84th minute: Quiñónez scored the winner with a precise curling effort from the edge of the area.

Tactical story

Olimpia controlled possession for long periods, using their midfield to switch play and create overloads on the flanks. Their movement in the final third caused Ameliano problems, particularly from set pieces and crosses into the box. However, Olimpia’s willingness to push full-backs forward left them exposed to counterattacks, and Ameliano exploited those spaces effectively.

Ameliano’s game plan was built on quick transitions and direct running. They were at their most dangerous when winning the ball in midfield and attacking before Olimpia’s defence could reset. In the end, though, Olimpia’s individual quality in the final minutes settled a match that could easily have finished level.

Standout players

Quiñónez was the match-winner for Olimpia, showing composure and technique for the decisive goal. Colmán’s first-half header and overall link-up play were also important. For Sportivo Ameliano, Amarilla and Valdez both impressed with their energy and finishing, while their midfield worked tirelessly to disrupt Olimpia’s rhythm.

Season impact

The three points keep Olimpia Asuncion firmly in the title conversation and underline their ability to win even when not at their fluent best. Sportivo Ameliano can take encouragement from a spirited performance, but the defeat leaves them with a sense of what might have been. In a competitive Paraguayan Primera Division campaign, such fine margins could prove significant.
