Club Libertad Asunción were held to a 1-1 draw by Sportivo Ameliano in the Paraguayan Primera Division, a result that could have implications at both ends of the table. Played at the Estadio Dr. Nicolás Leoz, the match saw Libertad dominate possession but fail to turn superiority into three points.

Sportivo Ameliano arrived with a clear plan: defend deep, stay compact and take advantage of any set-piece or counter-attacking opportunity. It worked well enough to earn a valuable draw against one of Paraguay's traditional powers.

Match overview

Libertad started on the front foot, moving the ball quickly and forcing Ameliano into a low block. The home side's pressure eventually told when they scored the opening goal in the first half. But Ameliano refused to fold, grew into the game after the break and equalised with a well-worked move.

The final 20 minutes were played almost entirely in Ameliano's half, but Libertad could not find a second goal. The visitors defended with grit, cleared their lines repeatedly and celebrated a hard-earned point at the final whistle.

Key moments

• 28' – Libertad take the lead: A sharp combination on the edge of the box freed a forward, who finished calmly past the goalkeeper.
• 45+2' – Ameliano warning: A free-kick forced a strong save from the Libertad goalkeeper just before half-time.
• 63' – Ameliano equalise: A deep cross was headed back across goal and turned in from close range.
• 78' – Libertad denied: The home side's best chance of the second half ended with a goal-line clearance.
• 90+4' – Late pressure: Libertad sent everyone forward, but Ameliano's defence held firm.

Tactical story

Libertad's 4-3-3 looked to overload the flanks and create crossing opportunities, but Ameliano's back five narrowed the spaces inside the penalty area. The visitors were happy to concede possession in harmless areas and then break through their quick forwards. Libertad's midfielders circulated the ball well but lacked penetration in the final third, especially after Ameliano equalised.

Ameliano's discipline was impressive. Their wing-backs tracked back diligently, and their central defenders won most of the aerial duels. The draw was built on organisation rather than luck.

Standout performers

Ameliano's goalkeeper was arguably the man of the match, making important saves in each half and commanding his area. Their central midfielder also broke up play effectively and started several counters. For Libertad, the goalscorer was lively throughout, while their deep-lying playmaker dictated the tempo but could not unlock the defence late on.

What the result means

For Club Libertad Asunción, the dropped points could be costly in the Primera Division title race, especially if rivals win their fixtures. Sportivo Ameliano, meanwhile, will view the draw as evidence of their growing competitiveness and a useful addition to their points tally. The head-to-head now adds extra intrigue to the reverse fixture later in the season.
