River Plate (PAR) 2-1 Sportivo Iteno: Second-Half Comeback Boosts Promotion Push

River Plate (PAR) recovered from an early setback to beat Sportivo Iteno 2-1 in PAR D3 on Friday, with two second-half goals turning the match at the Estadio River Plate.

Sportivo Iteno made the brighter start and took the lead in the 18th minute when Rodrigo Villalba capitalised on a loose ball in the box. River Plate struggled to find rhythm in the opening half hour, with Iteno’s midfield pressing aggressively and disrupting their build-up.

The equaliser arrived in the 54th minute. Jorge Benítez timed his run into the penalty area perfectly to meet a cross from the right and headed past the goalkeeper. The goal transformed River Plate’s confidence and the home side began to dominate possession.

The winner came in the 82nd minute. Substitute Matías Aquino cut inside from the left and curled a shot into the far corner, sparking celebrations on the bench. It was a goal that rewarded River Plate’s improved intensity after the break.

Key moments

Sportivo Iteno had a chance to regain the lead shortly after River Plate’s equaliser, but a close-range effort was blocked. River Plate then went close from a set piece before Aquino’s decisive strike. In stoppage time, Iteno pushed bodies forward but could not find an equaliser.

Tactical story

Iteno’s early pressing forced River Plate into rushed passes, but the hosts adjusted by playing more directly through their midfield. The introduction of fresh legs on the flanks stretched Iteno’s defence and created the space for the winning goal. River Plate’s full-backs also pushed higher in the second half, pinning Iteno back.

Standout players

Benítez’s equaliser was crucial, while Aquino made the difference from the bench. For Sportivo Iteno, Villalba was a constant threat in the first half and took his goal well.

Table impact

The three points strengthen River Plate (PAR)’s position in the PAR D3 promotion race and give them momentum heading into their next fixture. Sportivo Iteno remain in search of consistency after a promising start slipped away. River Plate’s ability to respond after conceding will encourage their supporters as the season progresses.
