Deportivo Recoleta booked their place in the next round of the Paraguayan Cup with a convincing 3-1 victory over Guairena at the Estadio Roque Battilana in Asunción. The Primera División side produced a composed, ruthless performance in the knockout tie, scoring through a dominant first-half spell and then managing the game expertly after the break to deny Guairena any realistic route back into the contest.

The result was exactly what Recoleta's supporters had hoped for against a Guairena team that has traditionally been difficult to break down in cup football. Two goals inside the opening half-hour set the tone, and although Guairena pulled one back to briefly raise the prospect of a nervy finish, Recoleta restored their two-goal cushion and closed out the match without further alarm.

Match Overview

From the first whistle, Recoleta looked the sharper and more proactive of the two sides. Their midfield pressed high, forcing Guairena into hurried clearances, and the front line consistently attacked the space behind the visiting full-backs. The early pressure paid off when Recoleta opened the scoring with a well-worked move that ended with a low finish inside the penalty area.

Guairena, who travelled from Villarrica in the Guairá department, tried to respond with the direct, purposeful football that has long been their trademark in the Paraguayan Cup. They found joy down the right flank on a few occasions, but their final ball repeatedly let them down, and any momentum they generated was killed off when Recoleta doubled the lead before the interval.

Key Moments

• Opening goal: Recoleta broke the deadlock with a patient build-up that ended in a first-time finish, capping a bright opening spell.
• Second goal: A quickly taken transition caught Guairena short at the back, and Recoleta made it 2-0 with a confident strike from the edge of the area.
• Guairena's response: The visitors halved the deficit with their best move of the night, a sweeping attack that ended with a composed finish past the Recoleta goalkeeper.
• The decisive third: Minutes after Guairena's goal, Recoleta won possession high up the pitch and punished the mistake to make it 3-1 and settle the tie.
• Late game management: Recoleta slowed the tempo, kept possession in wide areas, and saw out the closing stages with minimal risk.

Tactical Story

Recoleta's approach was built on aggressive counter-pressing and quick vertical passing. Their midfield three squeezed the space in which Guairena's playmakers wanted to operate, and the defensive line pushed up to compress the pitch, meaning Guairena had to go long far more often than they would have liked. That pattern of play explained the territorial dominance and much of the shot count.

Guairena's best moments came when they managed to switch play quickly and get their wide players isolated against a single defender. Their goal was a perfect example: a fast, direct sequence that bypassed the press entirely. The problem was consistency. Too often the move broke down one pass too early, and once Recoleta regained their two-goal advantage, the game's structure was never seriously threatened again.

Defensively, Recoleta's centre-back pairing dealt well with the aerial threat, winning the majority of duels inside their own box, while the goalkeeper's handling on crosses was secure throughout. Guairena's most productive spells came from set pieces, but Recoleta's marking schemes held firm in the closing 20 minutes.

Standout Players

Recoleta's attacking midfielders were the difference-makers on the night, linking play intelligently between the lines and arriving late in the box to support the centre-forward. The goalscorers will take the headlines, but the tempo-setter in central midfield deserved just as much credit for controlling the rhythm of the match.

For Guairena, the brightest performer was the wide attacker who drove at Recoleta's back line throughout the second half, and it was his direct running that created the goal. The goalkeeper also made several important saves to keep the scoreline respectable. Ultimately, though, Guairena lacked the cutting edge to turn possession into genuine pressure at 3-1.

Cup Progress and Season Impact

Knockout football in the Paraguayan Cup is unforgiving — a single bad night ends a campaign — so progression is the only statistic that truly matters. For Recoleta, the win keeps alive the possibility of a deep cup run alongside their league commitments, which can be a significant boost for squad morale and rotation opportunities during a congested fixture calendar.

For Guairena, elimination represents a disappointment but not a disaster. Cup exits o
