Vålerenga Women 2-1 FK Haugesund Women: Late Winner Seals Hard-Fought Victory

Vålerenga Women maintained their push at the top of the Norwegian Toppserien with a narrow 2-1 win over FK Haugesund Women at Intility Arena on Friday, 18 September 2026. A late goal from captain Stine Ballisager secured all three points in a match that proved far more difficult than many had predicted.

Vålerenga dominated possession from the outset, moving the ball patiently and probing for gaps in a well-organised Haugesund defence. The breakthrough came in the 23rd minute when Synne Jensen latched onto a defence-splitting pass and finished confidently into the bottom corner. It was a goal that rewarded Vålerenga’s early control.

Haugesund Fight Back

To their credit, Haugesund refused to buckle. They defended in numbers and looked to hit Vålerenga on the counter-attack. Their persistence paid off in the 61st minute when Ingrid Alvheim capitalised on a rare defensive mix-up, slotting the ball past the advancing goalkeeper to level the scores.

The equaliser stunned the home crowd and gave Haugesund renewed belief. For the next 20 minutes, the game became a tense, scrappy affair, with Vålerenga struggling to rediscover their earlier rhythm. Haugesund’s goalkeeper made two excellent saves to deny Jensen and substitute Karina Sævik.

Ballisager’s Late Heroics

Just as it seemed the points would be shared, Vålerenga won a corner in the 88th minute. The delivery was whipped into the near post, and Stine Ballisager rose highest to glance a header into the far corner. The stadium erupted as the captain wheeled away in celebration.

Haugesund pushed forward desperately in the remaining minutes, but Vålerenga’s defence held firm. The final whistle confirmed a vital win that keeps the Oslo club in contention for the league title.

Tactical Story: Possession vs Resilience

Vålerenga’s 4-3-3 formation focused on controlling the midfield and overloading the flanks. They completed over 600 passes, but Haugesund’s compact 4-4-2 defensive block made it difficult to create clear chances. The visitors’ discipline and organisation were admirable, and their counter-attacking threat kept Vålerenga honest throughout.

The introduction of Sævik and Thea Bjelde in the second half added fresh legs and width, which ultimately helped Vålerenga stretch Haugesund’s defence and create the late set-piece opportunity.

Standout Players

• Stine Ballisager: The match-winner. A commanding defensive display capped by a crucial goal.
