Sarpsborg 08 edged Vålerenga Fotball Elite 3-2 in a five-goal Norwegian SAS Braathens Cup thriller on 29 October 2026, with a late winner settling an end-to-end contest at Sarpsborg Stadion. The hosts led 2-0 inside 35 minutes, but Vålerenga fought back to level before Sarpsborg found the decisive goal in the 84th minute.

Match overview

Sarpsborg began with real intensity, pressing Vålerenga high and forcing mistakes in the visitors’ build-up. The early pressure paid off with two goals before the 35-minute mark, both stemming from quick attacks and good movement in the final third. Vålerenga, however, showed character and pulled one back just before half-time with a well-taken finish from the edge of the box.

The second half was a different contest. Vålerenga controlled more possession and equalised in the 68th minute after a sustained spell of pressure. That set up a tense final 20 minutes, with both sides pushing for the winner. Sarpsborg found it in the 84th minute, capitalising on a loose ball in the box and finishing decisively to send the home crowd into celebration.

Tactical story

Sarpsborg’s aggressive pressing was the defining feature of the first half. They forced Vålerenga into errors and attacked quickly through the channels, creating chances before the visitors could settle. Vålerenga’s response was to slow the game down, keep the ball better and use their midfield rotations to pull Sarpsborg out of shape.

That adjustment worked for long periods in the second half, and Vålerenga’s equaliser was a reward for their improved control. But Sarpsborg’s willingness to keep attacking rather than settle for extra time proved decisive. Their late winner came from exactly the kind of scrappy, high-intensity moment that had characterised their best spells earlier in the match.

Standout performers

Sarpsborg’s forward line caused problems throughout, with the left-sided attacker particularly effective in the first half. The midfielder who drove the press set the tone for the hosts. For Vålerenga, the playmaker was central to their comeback, dictating play and creating chances after the break. Both goalkeepers made important saves in a game that could easily have produced more goals.

What it means

Sarpsborg 08 advance after a win that showcased their attacking intent and resilience. Vålerenga will rue a slow start that left them with too much to do, even though their second-half response was impressive. In a cup tie full of momentum swings, Sarpsborg’s ability to find one more goal proved the difference.
