Fredrikstad delivered a ruthless away performance on 29 October 2026, beating Ranheim IL 5-2 in the Norwegian SAS Braathens Cup. The visitors combined clinical finishing with sharp counter-attacking to progress in style, while Ranheim’s defensive frailties were exposed in a high-scoring cup tie.

Fredrikstad punish Ranheim in cup thriller

Fredrikstad started brightly and took the lead in the 9th minute when Henrik Kjelsrud Johansen turned inside the box and fired low into the corner. Ranheim responded well, equalising in the 31st minute through Marius Augdal, whose header from a deep cross gave the home crowd hope. But Fredrikstad restored their advantage seven minutes later when Mai Traoré finished a rapid counter-attack with a composed strike.

The second half belonged to Fredrikstad. They scored their third in the 61st minute through Johansen’s second of the night, then added a fourth in the 84th minute when Filip Delaveris curled a fine effort beyond the goalkeeper. Ranheim briefly threatened a comeback when Erik Tønne scored in the 72nd minute, but Fredrikstad’s response was immediate and emphatic. A stoppage-time fifth goal capped a dominant attacking display.

Tactical story

Fredrikstad’s plan was clear: absorb pressure, win the ball in midfield and attack quickly. Ranheim saw plenty of possession in the first half but were repeatedly undone by the speed of Fredrikstad’s transitions. The visitors’ front line stretched the home defence, and their movement between the lines created space for late runners into the box.

Ranheim’s defensive line struggled to handle Fredrikstad’s direct running, particularly after the hour mark when the game became increasingly open. The home side’s equaliser showed they could threaten from wide deliveries, but their inability to sustain pressure after conceding the third goal proved costly. Fredrikstad managed the closing stages well, slowing the tempo when needed and then striking again to remove any doubt about the result.

Standout players

Henrik Kjelsrud Johansen was the headline performer with two goals and a constant threat in the penalty area. Mai Traoré added pace and directness, while Filip Delaveris produced one of the goals of the night. For Ranheim, Marius Augdal and Erik Tønne took their goals well, but the team’s defensive shape will be a concern for the coaching staff.

What the result means

The 5-2 win sends Fredrikstad into the next round of the Norwegian SAS Braathens Cup and underlines their attacking potential in knockout football. For Ranheim IL, the cup exit is a difficult one to take, especially after scoring twice at home, but the performance highlighted both their attacking spirit and the defensive improvements needed. Fredrikstad’s ability to score in bursts made the difference, and their away support will have enjoyed a convincing cup victory.
