Match Overview

The cup tie brought a rare competitive meeting between two clubs separated by just a few kilometers in the Stavanger region. Madla IL, competing in the lower divisions, were hoping to spring a surprise against their more illustrious neighbors. Viking, however, showed their top-flight quality with a disciplined and patient performance. The visitors dominated possession and created chances at will, while Madla defended in numbers and looked to hit on the break. The gulf in class was evident, but the home side's spirit and organization kept the score respectable until the closing stages.

Key Moments

Viking took the lead in the 18th minute when Markus Solbakken threaded a pass to Zlatko Tripic, who finished calmly. The same duo combined again on 34 minutes, with Tripic turning provider for Lars-Jørgen Salvesen to double the advantage. Madla's best chance fell to Kristian Madland just before half-time, but his effort was well saved. In the second half, Viking continued to press and added a third on 72 minutes through substitute Simen Kvia-Egeskog, who tapped in from close range after a sweeping move. Madla never stopped running, but they could not find a consolation goal.

Tactical Story

Viking set up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, using width and quick combinations to break down Madla's 5-4-1 defensive block. The hosts sat deep, inviting pressure, and tried to launch counters through Madland and Erik Tønnessen. Viking's midfield duo of Solbakken and Joe Bell controlled the tempo, while the full-backs pushed high to create overloads. Madla's goalkeeper, Anders Vatne, made several fine saves to keep the score down, but Viking's quality eventually told.

• Markus Solbakken (Viking): Dictated play from midfield and provided two assists.
