Follo 0-2 Sarpsborg 08 — Sarpsborg 08 avoided a Norwegian SAS Braathens Cup upset with a controlled 2-0 away win over Follo on 30 September 2026. The Eliteserien visitors scored once in each half, breaking down a disciplined lower-division side before sealing the result late at Ski Stadion.

Match overview

Played under the lights with a 22:00 kick-off, the cup tie pitted Follo’s compact, hard-running approach against Sarpsborg 08’s superior technical quality. Follo began with a deep defensive block, looking to frustrate their more celebrated opponents and strike through quick transitions. For long spells, the plan worked: Sarpsborg saw most of the ball but found little space between the lines.

The first half ended goalless, though not without chances. Sarpsborg forced a series of corners and tested Follo goalkeeper Erik Dalen from distance, while Follo’s best moment came on a counter-attack that ended with a shot dragged wide of the far post. The visitors increased the tempo after the break and eventually turned their territorial control into goals.

Key moments

• First half: Follo goalkeeper Erik Dalen made two sharp saves to keep the score level, including a low stop from a close-range effort.
• 54th minute: Sarpsborg broke through when Sander Christiansen rose at the near post to head in a corner, giving the Eliteserien side a deserved lead.
• 82nd minute: Substitute Jonas Åsen doubled the advantage on the counter, finishing low across the goalkeeper after a quick transition through midfield.
• Late: Follo pushed players forward in search of a consolation, but Sarpsborg managed the closing minutes calmly and kept a clean sheet.

Tactical story

Sarpsborg 08 controlled possession with a patient 4-3-3, using their full-backs to stretch Follo’s midfield and create overloads in wide areas. Follo defended in a disciplined 4-4-2, with two banks of four sitting deep and inviting pressure. The lower-division side’s challenge was always going to be maintaining that intensity for 90 minutes, and as legs tired, gaps began to appear.

The decisive factor was Sarpsborg’s set-piece quality and their ability to win second balls around the penalty area. Follo’s goalkeeper kept the tie alive, but Sarpsborg’s substitutions added fresh pace and directness. Once the second goal arrived, the visitors’ game management was professional: they slowed the tempo, kept possession near the corners, and denied Follo any late momentum.

Standout players

Sander Christiansen was Sarpsborg’s most influential attacker, not only for his opening goal but for his link-up play between midfield and defence. Jonas Åsen made an immediate impact from the bench, using his speed to punish Follo on the break. For Follo, goalkeeper Erik Dalen was the clear standout, producing several saves that kept the score respectable. Their captain also led by example in central defence, winning headers and organising the back line until the closing stages.

What it means

The victory sends Sarpsborg 08 into the next round of the Norwegian SAS Braathens Cup, where they will expect to be a difficult opponent for any remaining side. For Follo, the exit will sting, but the performance offered plenty of encouragement: they stayed organised, competed physically, and made a higher-ranked team work for the win. Cup nights like this remain an important part of the Norwegian football calendar, giving lower-division clubs a chance to test themselves against top-flight quality.
