Kongsvinger produced one of their most complete performances of the Norwegian 1. Divisjon season on Sunday, sweeping aside Sandnes Ulf 4-0 at Gjemselund Stadion in a result that strengthens their promotion credentials and deepens Sandnes Ulf’s relegation worries.

From the opening whistle, Kongsvinger played with purpose and precision. They pressed high, moved the ball quickly through midfield and repeatedly exposed Sandnes Ulf’s back line with runs from wide areas. By the time the first half ended, the home side had already established a deserved two-goal cushion and had rarely looked troubled defensively.

Match overview

Kongsvinger set the tone inside the first quarter of an hour. Their midfield won second balls consistently, allowing the front four to attack a retreating Sandnes Ulf defence. The opening goal arrived in the 12th minute when Emil Solberg finished calmly at the near post after a low cross from the right. The lead doubled in the 34th minute through Kristian Lien, whose close-range strike capped a spell of sustained pressure.

Sandnes Ulf tried to slow the game down after the interval, but Kongsvinger remained dominant. Solberg added his second in the 58th minute, and substitute Oskar Røe completed the scoring with a header in the 79th. The visitors’ best chance came shortly before half-time, but a goal-line clearance preserved Kongsvinger’s clean sheet.

Key moments

• 12’ — Emil Solberg opens the scoring: A quick switch of play released the right flank, and Solberg’s first-time finish gave the Sandnes Ulf goalkeeper no chance.
• 34’ — Kristian Lien doubles the lead: Kongsvinger won the ball high up the pitch and punished Sandnes Ulf with a swift move through the middle.
• 58’ — Solberg strikes again: The winger cut inside from the left and curled a low effort beyond the diving keeper.
• 79’ — Oskar Røe seals it: The substitute rose highest from a corner and nodded in the fourth goal.

Tactical story

Kongsvinger’s 4-2-3-1 shape was fluid and aggressive. The two holding midfielders controlled the centre, while the full-backs pushed high to create overloads against Sandnes Ulf’s wide defenders. The home side’s pressing was particularly effective in the first half, forcing Sandnes Ulf into hurried clearances and preventing them from building any rhythm.

Sandnes Ulf sat in a deep 5-3-2 block, hoping to absorb pressure and hit on the counter. But once Kongsvinger scored early, the visitors were forced to open up, and that played directly into the home side’s hands. Kongsvinger finished with 18 shots, nine of them on target, while Sandnes Ulf managed only a handful of meaningful attempts.

Standout performers

Emil Solberg was the obvious headline-maker with two well-taken goals, but Kristian Lien’s movement and link-up play were equally important. Captain Andreas Hovde controlled the tempo from midfield and repeatedly broke up Sandnes Ulf’s counter-attacks. At the back, Kongsvinger’s centre-back pairing dealt comfortably with long balls and set pieces, ensuring the clean sheet was never seriously threatened after the opening exchanges.

Season impact

The three points keep Kongsvinger firmly in the Norwegian 1. Divisjon promotion conversation, with the team building momentum at the right stage of the campaign. For Sandnes Ulf, the defeat leaves little room for error in the remaining fixtures. A heavy away loss damages confidence, but more importantly it highlights the defensive fragility that has troubled them throughout the season. Kongsvinger, by contrast, look increasingly capable of turning a strong campaign into a genuine promotion push.
