Haugesund produced a commanding 2-0 victory over Stabaek at Haugesund Sparebank Arena on Saturday night, a result that strengthens their position at the top end of the Norwegian 1. Divisjon table. Two second-half goals settled a match that had been finely balanced for the opening hour.

Match Overview

With both clubs harbouring ambitions of returning to the Eliteserien, this was always going to be a keenly contested affair. Haugesund, unbeaten at home this season, started with intent, pressing high and forcing Stabaek into early mistakes. The visitors, organised in a compact 4-2-3-1, looked to absorb pressure and hit on the break, but they struggled to keep hold of the ball for sustained periods.

Key Moments

The deadlock was broken in the 58th minute. A quick exchange on the edge of the box released Martin Samuelsen, who cut inside onto his left foot and curled a precise shot into the far corner. The goal sparked wild celebrations and visibly lifted the home side.

Twelve minutes later, Haugesund doubled their lead. A deep corner was only half-cleared, and Alexander Stølås pounced on the loose ball, firing a low drive through a crowded penalty area and into the net. Stabaek protested for a possible foul in the build-up, but the referee waved away the appeals.

Stabaek's best chance came in the 77th minute when a free-kick from the left was met by a glancing header, but the ball flashed just wide of the post. Haugesund managed the closing stages professionally, keeping possession and limiting their opponents to hopeful long balls.

Tactical Breakdown

Haugesund's 4-3-3 was fluid, with the wingers rotating and the full-backs providing overlapping runs. Their high press forced Stabaek into 14 turnovers in the attacking half. Stabaek, meanwhile, struggled to transition from defence to attack, often leaving their lone striker isolated. Their substitutions added energy but lacked quality in the final third.

Standout Performers

• Martin Samuelsen (Haugesund): Broke the deadlock with a moment of individual brilliance and was a constant creative force.
• Alexander Stølås (Haugesund): Scored the second and was dominant in midfield duels.
• Markus Olsen (Stabaek): The goalkeeper kept the score respectable with several fine saves, including a one-on-one stop in the first half.

What It Means for the Table

Haugesund move level on points with the league leaders, sending a clear message to their promotion rivals. Stabaek remain in the play-off chase but will need to improve their away form if they are to challenge for automatic promotion. The result also extends Haugesund's unbeaten home run to 12 matches, a record that could prove decisive in the title race.
