Tikves Kavadarci produced one of the standout results of the North Macedonia Cup round by defeating FC Vardar Skopje 3-1 on 28 October 2026. The visitors combined clinical finishing with resilient defending to overcome a Vardar side that controlled long periods of possession but lacked the same sharpness in the final third.

Match overview

Vardar Skopje began the cup tie with the confidence expected of the home side, moving the ball quickly and pushing Tikves back. However, the visitors were organised and dangerous on the counterattack. Tikves took the lead against the run of play and, although Vardar equalised before half-time, the away side restored their advantage after the break and added a third goal late on to seal the result.

The scoreline reflects a cup match full of contrasts: Vardar had more of the ball, but Tikves created the clearer chances and defended their penalty area with determination. Every time Vardar appeared to be building momentum, Tikves found a way to relieve the pressure and threaten on the break.

Key moments

• Tikves opened the scoring with a fast counterattack, finishing calmly after breaking through the Vardar midfield.
• Vardar responded before half-time, equalising with a header from a well-delivered set piece.
• Tikves regained the lead in the second half after a quick move down the left created space inside the box.
• A late third goal ended Vardar’s hopes of a comeback and confirmed Tikves’ place in the next round.

Tactical story

Vardar’s game plan revolved around possession and pressing high up the pitch, but Tikves were well prepared for it. The visitors sat in a compact block, invited pressure and then attacked the spaces left behind Vardar’s advancing full-backs. That approach produced the opening goal and remained a threat throughout the match.

Tikves also managed the game intelligently after taking the lead for the second time. Rather than dropping too deep, they kept an outlet up front and continued to ask questions of the Vardar defence. Vardar, meanwhile, became increasingly stretched as they chased the equaliser, and that openness allowed Tikves to finish the tie with a third goal.

Standout performers

Tikves’ forward line deserves much of the credit for the win, with sharp movement and composed finishing in key moments. The goalkeeper and centre-backs also played important roles, absorbing pressure and dealing with a stream of crosses in the second half. For Vardar, there were encouraging spells of possession and a well-taken equaliser, but the night belonged to the visitors’ organisation and efficiency.

What the result means

The 3-1 victory sends Tikves Kavadarci through in the North Macedonia Cup and marks a significant away win against one of the country’s most recognisable clubs. For Vardar Skopje, the cup exit is a disappointment, especially after enjoying more possession, but the performance highlighted the importance of converting control into goals. Tikves will take confidence from the result as they look ahead to the next round.
