Potenza Calcio U19 2-1 Cavese U19: Late Decider Settles Tight Croatian Third League Youth Fixture

Potenza Calcio U19 edged past Cavese U19 2-1 in a Croatian Third Football League youth encounter that swung one way and then the other before being settled in the closing stages. It was a match of fine margins, decided by a moment of quality in the final third and a defensive error that Cavese will replay in their minds for some time.

The victory strengthens Potenza's position among the promotion-chasing group and underlines the value of their home form. Cavese, meanwhile, remain a competitive but inconsistent side — capable of matching anyone for long periods, yet still searching for the ruthlessness required to close out tight games.

Match Overview

Both sides began cautiously, respecting each other's attacking threat. Potenza Calcio U19 looked to play through the thirds with short, sharp passing, while Cavese U19 favoured a more direct approach, looking to turn the Potenza defence with balls over the top.

The breakthrough came midway through the first half when Potenza's pressure finally told. A cleverly worked move down the left created space inside the box, and the finish was emphatic. Cavese responded well, though, and were level before the interval — a reminder of their resilience and their ability to punish lapses in concentration.

The second half was a scrappier affair, with both teams cancelling each other out for long stretches. As the clock ticked down and a draw began to look likely, Potenza found one last surge. A well-timed interception in midfield sparked a counter-attack, and the winning goal arrived to send the home support into celebration.

Key Moments

• 1-0 Potenza: A slick passing sequence down the left opened up the Cavese defence, and the finish was clinical.
• 1-1 Cavese: A quick response, capitalising on a loose ball in the box after a set-piece was only half cleared.
• Winning goal: A midfield turnover led to a rapid break, finished with real composure to make it 2-1.
• Late scramble: Cavese threw bodies forward in stoppage time and won two corners, but Potenza's defence held firm.

Tactical Story

Potenza Calcio U19's success came from their control of the middle third. Their central midfielders were composed in possession and disciplined without it, consistently screening the space in front of the back four. That structure forced Cavese to go long more often than they would have liked, and their attackers struggled to hold the ball up against a physical defence.

Cavese U19's equaliser came from their one clear tactical strength: set-pieces. They consistently loaded the box with numbers and caused problems with delivery into the six-yard area. However, their inability to sustain pressure from open play ultimately cost them, and their midfield was caught too high up the pitch for Potenza's winning goal.

Standout Performers

Potenza's attacking midfielder was the creative hub throughout, repeatedly finding pockets of space and linking play intelligently. The winning goal's assist came from a midfield partner whose reading of the game was exceptional. For Cavese, their goalkeeper made a string of saves to keep the deficit at one for as long as he did, and their forward line showed genuine promise on the counter.

Season Impact

These are exactly the kinds of matches that decide league positions in the Croatian Third Football League. Winning when not at your fluent best is a hallmark of serious promotion contenders, and Potenza Calcio U19 demonstrated that quality here. Cavese U19 will take encouragement from their performance but must convert competitive displays into points if they are to climb the table.

Final score: Potenza Calcio U19 2-1 Cavese U19.
