Strabane Athletic and Loughgall FC played out a competitive 1-1 draw in the Northern Ireland Football League Championship on 17 October 2026, with both sides taking a point from a hard-fought encounter at Melvin Sports Complex.

Loughgall took the lead in the first half through Andrew Hoey, but Strabane Athletic responded after the break with a well-worked equaliser from Ryan McCloskey. Neither team could find a winner in the closing stages, despite a lively finish that saw chances at both ends.

Match Overview

The first half was evenly contested, with Loughgall enjoying slightly more possession and Strabane looking dangerous on the counter. Loughgall’s breakthrough came in the 35th minute when Andrew Hoey found space on the edge of the box and guided a shot into the corner.

Strabane increased their intensity after half-time, pressing higher and committing more players forward. Their persistence paid off when Ryan McCloskey finished off a slick passing move. Both teams pushed for a late winner, but solid goalkeeping and some last-ditch defending ensured the points were shared.

Key Moments

• 35th minute – Loughgall 1-0: Andrew Hoey controlled a pass on the edge of the area, shifted the ball onto his right foot and curled it beyond the goalkeeper.
• 49th minute – Strabane chance: A header from a corner flashed just wide as Strabane started the second half strongly.
• 72nd minute – Strabane 1-1: Ryan McCloskey finished a neat move, arriving in the box to convert a low cross from the right.
• 81st minute – Loughgall save: Strabane’s goalkeeper made a fine low save to deny Loughgall a quick response.
• 90th minute – Late pressure: Loughgall won a series of corners but could not force the ball over the line.

Tactical Story

Loughgall’s 4-3-3 looked to control midfield with short passing and patient build-up. They found joy in the first half by switching play quickly and attacking the space behind Strabane’s full-backs. However, their grip on the game loosened after the break as Strabane raised their pressing line.

Strabane Athletic’s 4-4-2 became more aggressive in the second half, with the front two pressing the Loughgall centre-backs and forcing longer passes. That change gave Strabane more possession and allowed their wide players to push higher. The equaliser came from exactly that kind of pressure, and neither side was able to land a decisive blow afterwards.

Standout Players

Ryan McCloskey was Strabane’s most influential player, scoring the equaliser and linking play intelligently in the final third. The goalkeeper also played a key role with a vital save late on. In defence, Strabane’s centre-backs recovered well after a shaky opening 20 minutes.

For Loughgall, Andrew Hoey was the standout, taking his goal with composure and causing problems with his movement. Their midfield captain kept the team organised and nearly created a late winner with a clever through ball. The goalkeeper made two important stops to preserve the draw.

What It Means

The draw keeps both clubs in the thick of the Northern Ireland Football League Championship battle. Strabane Athletic will take encouragement from their second-half response and the character shown to come from behind. Loughgall FC will feel they should have protected their lead but will also recognise the value of an away point.

With the table remaining tight, every result matters. This 1-1 draw adds another competitive chapter to the season and leaves both sides with positives to build on as they prepare for their next fixtures.
