Vitesse U21 3-1 Fortuna Sittard Reserve: Hosts Cruise to Netherlands U21 Victory

Vitesse U21 produced a commanding performance to beat Fortuna Sittard Reserve 3-1 in the Netherlands U21 competition on Saturday, 26 September 2026. The hosts controlled large periods of the match, scored at key moments, and deservedly took all three points in front of their home supporters.

Vitesse U21 were sharper from the first whistle, pressing high and moving the ball quickly through midfield. Fortuna Sittard Reserve struggled to contain their opponents’ width and intensity, and although they pulled a goal back in the second half, they never truly threatened to complete a comeback.

Match Overview

Vitesse U21 opened the scoring in the 11th minute when Jesse van der Velden converted a low cross at the near post. The lead was doubled in the 29th minute through Milan de Wit, who arrived late in the box to finish a flowing team move. At that stage, the hosts looked in complete control.

Fortuna Sittard Reserve improved after the break and halved the deficit in the 52nd minute when Ruben Custers found space between the centre-backs and slotted the ball past the goalkeeper. However, Vitesse U21 restored their two-goal cushion in the 76th minute through Jayden Vermeulen, whose powerful run and finish ended any hopes of a Fortuna revival.

Tactical Story

Vitesse U21 lined up with an energetic 4-3-3, using their wingers to stretch the Fortuna defence and their midfielders to dominate the central areas. The high press forced numerous turnovers and allowed the hosts to sustain attacks. Fortuna Sittard Reserve tried to play out from the back, but they were often hurried into long passes that Vitesse collected comfortably.

After conceding the second goal, Fortuna adjusted their shape and enjoyed a better spell early in the second half. Their goal was a reward for that improvement, but Vitesse’s response was clinical. The third goal came from a moment of individual quality, and from there the hosts managed the game professionally.

Standout Players

Jesse van der Velden was a constant threat for Vitesse U21, scoring the opener and causing problems with his direct running. Milan de Wit controlled the tempo in midfield and added a well-taken goal. Jayden Vermeulen’s powerful cameo off the bench sealed the result. For Fortuna Sittard Reserve, Ruben Custers was the brightest spark and took his goal well.

Standings and Season Impact

The victory strengthens Vitesse U21’s position in the Netherlands U21 standings and gives them momentum for the next round of fixtures. Fortuna Sittard Reserve will need to regroup quickly, particularly defensively, after conceding early goals that left them chasing the game. For Vitesse, the performance was a clear statement of intent: when their pressing and passing click, they are a difficult side to live with.
