Heerenveen U21 2-1 NEC Nijmegen U21: Late Winner Settles Tight Netherlands U21 Clash

Heerenveen U21 claimed a hard-fought 2-1 victory over NEC Nijmegen U21 in their Netherlands U21 league fixture on 10 October 2026, with a late second-half goal deciding a contest that had been balanced for long spells. The match, played under the lights at Sportpark Skoatterwâld, kicked off at 21:00 and gave both development sides a demanding test of patience, pressing, and finishing.

The hosts started with purpose and were rewarded with an early opener, but NEC Nijmegen U21 responded well after the interval and equalised through a sharp counterattack. Just as the game appeared to be drifting toward a share of the points, Heerenveen found the decisive moment from a well-worked attacking sequence, sealing all three points and strengthening their position in the U21 standings.

Match Overview

Heerenveen U21 controlled the first half through quick ball circulation and aggressive counter-pressing. Their midfield trio repeatedly won second balls, allowing the front line to attack early and isolate NEC’s full-backs. The early goal reflected that pressure: a turnover in midfield was moved wide quickly before a low cross was converted from close range.

NEC Nijmegen U21 adjusted after the break, pushing their wingers higher and using longer diagonal passes to bypass Heerenveen’s press. The equaliser arrived in the 58th minute and gave the visitors real momentum. For a 15-minute period, NEC looked the more likely side to score next, but Heerenveen’s goalkeeper and centre-backs held firm before the home side reclaimed control.

Key Moments

• 17th minute: Heerenveen U21 took the lead when Milan de Jong arrived at the back post to finish a flowing move down the right.
• 34th minute: NEC’s first clear chance came from a set piece, but a header was cleared off the line by Thijs Wijnstra.
• 58th minute: NEC Nijmegen U21 equalised through Jayden Cijntje, who latched onto a through ball and finished calmly past the goalkeeper.
• 82nd minute: Heerenveen U21 regained the lead when substitute Lucas Hoekstra curled a left-footed shot into the far corner after a short corner routine.
• 90+3rd minute: NEC won a late free kick, but the delivery was overhit and Heerenveen cleared to secure the win.

Tactical Story

Heerenveen U21 lined up in a flexible 4-3-3 that became a 4-2-3-1 out of possession. Their aim was to trap NEC in wide areas and force hurried passes into midfield. Milan de Jong and Kaj van der Wal were especially effective in covering passing lanes, while full-backs Sem Kuiper and Niels Bekkema provided width without abandoning defensive duties.

NEC Nijmegen U21 preferred a 4-4-2 block and looked to spring forward through central midfield runners. Their equaliser came from exactly that pattern: a compact defensive shape, a quick vertical pass, and a forward running beyond the last line. However, Heerenveen’s late switch to a more direct approach, with Hoekstra introduced to attack the space behind NEC’s tiring defence, proved decisive.

Standout Players

Milan de Jong was central to Heerenveen’s best moments, scoring the opener and linking play between midfield and attack. Captain Thijs Wijnstra produced a composed defensive display, while Lucas Hoekstra’s impact from the bench underlined the squad depth available to the hosts. For NEC, Jayden Cijntje was the most dangerous player on the pitch after half-time, and goalkeeper Daan van Rijn kept the score level with two important saves before the late winner.

What the Result Means

The 2-1 win gives Heerenveen U21 a valuable three points in the Netherlands U21 league and continues their push toward the upper half of the table. For NEC Nijmegen U21, the defeat is a frustrating one, especially after a strong second-half spell, but the performance offered encouragement in transition and set-piece defending. Both sides will now turn to their next U21 fixtures, with Heerenveen looking to build momentum and NEC eager to convert promising periods into points.
