Key moments

• Maassluis opener: A neat move down the left ended with a first-time finish into the far corner.

Tactical story

Excelsior Maassluis set up to be hard to break down, with two banks of four and a willingness to counter at speed. Their midfielders closed central spaces, forcing Sportlust'46 to play sideways and backwards. When possession was won, Maassluis moved the ball forward quickly, targeting the space behind the home side’s advanced full-backs.

Sportlust'46 had plenty of the ball but lacked penetration. Their crosses were often cleared, and their shots from distance rarely troubled the goalkeeper. It was a lesson in cup football: possession matters, but efficiency in both boxes matters more.

Standout performers

Maassluis’ striker was the match-winner with a well-taken goal and an assist, while their goalkeeper kept a deserved clean sheet. The centre-back pairing was commanding in the air and calm under late pressure. For Sportlust'46, the goalkeeper made several saves to keep the score respectable, and the captain tried to drive the team forward from midfield.

What it means

Excelsior Maassluis advance in the KNVB Cup with confidence and a clean sheet to build on. Sportlust'46 exit the competition but will take lessons from a match in which they controlled long spells without creating enough. The 0-2 scoreline reflects the difference in clinical finishing, and Maassluis can now look forward to the next round.
