Final score: RKAV Volendam 2-2 Spakenburg (Spakenburg advanced on penalties)

RKAV Volendam and Spakenburg could not be separated after 120 minutes of KNVB Cup football on September 23, 2026, with the tie finishing 2-2 before Spakenburg edged the penalty shootout. It was a classic Dutch cup night: two committed sides, a raucous atmosphere and a finish that swung on the smallest margins.

Match overview

RKAV Volendam started brightly and took the lead with a well-worked move, but Spakenburg responded with composure. The visitors equalised before half-time and then went ahead in the second half, only for Volendam to find a late leveller that forced extra time. Neither side could find a winner in the additional period, sending the contest to spot-kicks.

The shootout was tense and full of quality, but Spakenburg’s goalkeeper proved the hero with a decisive save. The result sends Spakenburg into the next round and leaves RKAV Volendam with the bittersweet feeling of a strong cup performance that ultimately fell just short.

Key moments

• Volendam opener: A quick passing sequence opened up the Spakenburg defence and produced a confident finish.
• Spakenburg equaliser: The visitors levelled after a sustained spell of pressure, scoring from close range.
• Spakenburg lead: A second-half strike put the away side in front and silenced the home crowd for a spell.
• Late Volendam equaliser: With time running out, Volendam found a deserved goal to force extra time.
• Penalty drama: Spakenburg held their nerve from 12 yards, with their goalkeeper making the key save.

Tactical story

RKAV Volendam looked to play forward quickly, using the flanks to stretch Spakenburg’s back line. Their best moments came when midfielders joined the attack and created overloads around the box. Spakenburg, meanwhile, were more patient in possession and dangerous on the counter, especially when Volendam committed players forward.

Extra time became a test of fitness and concentration. Both teams had chances, but tired legs and resolute defending kept the score level. The penalty shootout was a fitting conclusion to a match that had momentum shifts, tactical adjustments and no shortage of cup passion.

Standout performers

Spakenburg’s goalkeeper was the obvious hero, saving the penalty that sent his team through. Their central striker also caused problems all night with intelligent hold-up play. For RKAV Volendam, the goalscorer and the left winger were the most threatening players, while the captain led by example until the final kick.

What it means

Spakenburg move on in the KNVB Cup and can look forward to another cup fixture, while RKAV Volendam must turn their focus back to league form. The 2-2 draw will be remembered for its drama, but the fine margins of the shootout decided the outcome. In a competition where cup runs can define a season, Spakenburg’s reward is a place in the next round.
