EVV made home advantage count in the KNVB Cup, running out comfortable 3-1 winners against Halsteren in a first-round tie that was decided by the hosts' superior cutting edge in the final third. Two goals in a dominant spell either side of the interval put EVV in control, and although Halsteren threatened a comeback, the home side managed the closing stages with maturity.

Match Overview

EVV came into the fixture on home soil in Echt and set the tone early, pressing Halsteren high and forcing the visitors into long, hopeful clearances. The pattern of the first half was clear: EVV with the ball, Halsteren trying to survive and counter. The breakthrough arrived after a period of sustained pressure, and once the hosts had their noses in front, they never really looked like surrendering the lead.

Halsteren improved considerably after the restart and pulled a goal back to briefly raise hopes of a turnaround, but EVV responded quickly to restore their cushion and then saw out the game calmly.

Key Moments

• Early pressure: EVV dominated the opening twenty minutes, forcing a series of corners and half-chances.
• First goal: The pressure told as EVV opened the scoring with a well-worked move down the right flank.
• Doubling up: A second goal before the interval put the home side firmly in command.
• Halsteren's lifeline: The visitors struck back to make it 2-1, giving themselves a platform in the second half.
• Sealing it: EVV settled the tie with a third goal, killing off any realistic chance of an upset.

Tactical Story

EVV's game plan revolved around dominating midfield and getting their wide players into one-on-one situations. They moved the ball quickly from side to side, pulling Halsteren's defensive block out of shape and creating gaps between the full-backs and centre-backs. The front players were intelligent with their movement, dropping into pockets of space and dragging defenders away from the danger areas.

Halsteren, for their part, defended deep for long stretches and tried to hit on the break. Their goal came from exactly that kind of transition, and it briefly unsettled EVV, who responded by slowing the tempo and regaining control. The hosts' ability to switch from attacking to game management was the story of the second half.

Standout Performers

EVV's attacking players were the game's dominant figures, with the wide men repeatedly beating their markers and the central forward linking play effectively. In midfield, the captain set the tempo and rarely gave the ball away. Halsteren's goalkeeper had a busy evening and made several saves to keep the scoreline respectable, while their goalscorer showed good instinct to punish a rare lapse in the EVV defence.

What It Means

A 3-1 home win is exactly what EVV wanted from this round — progression secured without the drama of extra time or penalties. They now await the draw for the next stage, where a professional club could lie in wait. Halsteren exit the competition after a spirited display, but the margin of defeat will leave them feeling they could have made life harder for their hosts in the first half.
