SC Heerenveen 4-0 Excelsior SBV — a ruthless, one-sided Eredivisie display at the Abe Lenstra Stadion saw Heerenveen dismantle Excelsior 4-0, with the home side scoring in bursts and never allowing their visitors a foothold in the match.

Match overview

This was as comfortable as an Eredivisie afternoon gets. Heerenveen were sharper, quicker to the second ball, and far more clinical in the final third, and the scoreline reflected the balance of play from the opening quarter of an hour. Four goals without reply, a clean sheet, and a home crowd sent home happy.

Excelsior arrived with the intention of staying compact and hitting on the transition, but once the first goal went in, that plan collapsed. Chasing the game against a side this confident in possession is an unforgiving task, and the visitors never recovered their structure.

How the game unfolded

Heerenveen set the tone early. Their wide players attacked their markers immediately, the full-backs overlapped aggressively, and the first goal arrived inside the opening twenty minutes — a move that started on the right, switched infield, and finished with a shot from the edge of the box.

The second came before half-time and was the moment the match effectively ended as a contest. A turnover high up the pitch allowed Heerenveen to attack a disorganised Excelsior back line, and the finish was emphatic.

After the break, the hosts added two more. The third was the product of sustained pressure and a goalmouth scramble, and the fourth came on the counter as Excelsior pushed bodies forward in a search for a consolation that never arrived.

Key moments

• Opening goal: patient build-up, a switch of play, and a low finish from the edge of the area to break the deadlock.
• Second goal: a high turnover punished instantly, with a first-time strike into the corner.
• Third goal: sustained pressure and a scrappy finish after Excelsior failed to clear their lines.
• Fourth goal: a counter-attack finished calmly after the visitors committed numbers forward.

Tactical story

Heerenveen's dominance came from width and tempo. They consistently created two-versus-one situations on the flanks, and Excelsior's midfield could not shift across quickly enough to cover. Once Heerenveen got the ball into the final third, they attacked the box with numbers rather than crosses alone, which is why so many of their chances came from central positions.

The pressing structure was the other decisive element. The home side won the ball back repeatedly inside Excelsior's half, and each of those turnovers became an immediate attacking opportunity. Excelsior, by contrast, struggled to progress the ball beyond their own midfield, and their rare forward forays were isolated rather than supported.

Standout performers

Heerenveen's attacking unit will take the headlines, but the foundation was laid by a midfield that controlled the game completely — winning second balls, switching play, and dictating the tempo. The defence, meanwhile, barely had a serious save to make, and the goalkeeper's clean sheet was the product of good organisation rather than last-ditch heroics.

For Excelsior, it was a night to forget. The goalkeeper was left exposed repeatedly and made several saves to prevent the scoreline from becoming harsher. Their centre-backs were given a difficult evening against runners arriving late from midfield.

What it means

A 4-0 home win does more than add three points — it builds goal difference and confidence, both of which matter enormously in the Eredivisie table as the season progresses. For Heerenveen, this is the template: high tempo, aggressive pressing, and clinical finishing.

Excelsior leave with a heavy defeat and clear work to do defensively. Their ability to stay compact against stronger opposition has been central to their survival in the top flight, and this performance will provide uncomfortable viewing for the coaching staff.
