SC Cambuur Leeuwarden 2-2 AZ Alkmaar: Late Equaliser Denies Hosts in Eredivisie Thriller

SC Cambuur Leeuwarden and AZ Alkmaar played out an entertaining 2-2 draw in the Eredivisie on Sunday evening, with a late AZ equaliser denying the home side a notable victory at the Kooi Stadion. Cambuur had fought back from an early deficit to lead 2-1 after the break, but AZ’s persistence paid off when Sven Mijnans levelled the score in the closing stages.

The result adds another competitive chapter to the Eredivisie season, with both teams showing why they can be dangerous in different ways. Cambuur brought energy, pressing and direct attacking, while AZ relied on possession, technical quality and patience. In the end, a share of the points felt like a fair reflection of a match that swung both ways.

Match overview

AZ Alkmaar started with the greater control, moving the ball quickly through midfield and looking to isolate their forwards against Cambuur’s back line. The visitors took the lead when Troy Parrott found space inside the penalty area and finished calmly, giving AZ an early advantage and forcing Cambuur to respond.

Cambuur’s response was impressive. The home side increased their pressing intensity, won second balls in midfield and began to stretch AZ down the flanks. Remco Balk brought the hosts level before half-time with a well-taken effort, and the Kooi Stadion crowd grew louder as Cambuur finished the first half on top.

After the break, Cambuur continued to play with purpose. Milan de Haan put them ahead from the penalty spot after a period of sustained pressure, and for a while the home side looked capable of seeing out a valuable win. AZ, however, pushed more players forward in the final 15 minutes and found their reward through Mijnans, whose late finish ensured the points were shared.

Key moments

• Early AZ breakthrough: Troy Parrott opened the scoring for AZ Alkmaar after a quick move through midfield.
• Cambuur equalise: Remco Balk levelled before half-time, rewarding the hosts for their improved pressing and width.
• Hosts take the lead: Milan de Haan converted a penalty after the interval to put SC Cambuur Leeuwarden 2-1 ahead.
• Late AZ response: Sven Mijnans equalised in the closing stages as AZ Alkmaar pushed for a way back into the game.

Tactical story

Cambuur’s approach was built on intensity. Their midfield pressed aggressively, attempting to force AZ into rushed passes and create turnovers in promising areas. When they won the ball back, they looked to attack quickly, often using the wide channels to deliver crosses or cut inside.

AZ Alkmaar, by contrast, wanted to control the rhythm. Their midfield rotations and patient build-up created spells of dominance, but Cambuur’s energy made it difficult for the visitors to settle. AZ’s late equaliser came from their willingness to keep pushing bodies forward, and it underlined the fine margins in a match where both teams had spells on top.

Standout players

Remco Balk was central to Cambuur’s attacking threat, combining movement with a decisive finish. Milan de Haan showed composure from the penalty spot and helped drive the hosts forward. For AZ Alkmaar, Troy Parrott’s movement and finishing gave the visitors a focal point, while Sven Mijnans delivered the most important moment of the second half with the late equaliser.

What the point means

The draw gives SC Cambuur Leeuwarden another useful point in the Eredivisie standings and reinforces their ability to compete against stronger possession-based opponents. For AZ Alkmaar, the late goal protects an unbeaten result and keeps them moving in the right direction, even if the performance left room for improvement defensively.

Both sides will now turn their attention to the next round of Eredivisie fixtures, with Cambuur keen to build on their home performance and AZ looking to turn more of their possession into clear-cut chances. On this evidence, the 2-2 scoreline was a fitting result for a match full of momentum shifts.
