Excelsior SBV 0-1 Go Ahead Eagles: Deijl Header Settles Eredivisie Contest

Go Ahead Eagles claimed a valuable 1-0 away win over Excelsior SBV in the Eredivisie, with Mats Deijl’s first-half header proving the difference at the Van Donge & De Roo Stadion. The visitors defended their lead with discipline and absorbed late pressure to secure three points on the road.

Excelsior enjoyed more of the ball after the break but struggled to turn possession into clear chances. Go Ahead Eagles’ compact shape and set-piece quality gave them the edge in a tightly contested match.

Match Overview

The opening stages were balanced, with Excelsior looking to play through midfield and Go Ahead Eagles pressing selectively. The home side had the first sight of goal, but their effort from distance was comfortably saved. Go Ahead Eagles grew into the game and began to threaten from set pieces, an area that has become a reliable source of goals for them.

The decisive moment came in the 34th minute when Deijl attacked a corner and powered a header past the goalkeeper. Excelsior responded before half-time but could not find an equaliser, and the pattern continued after the break as the home side pushed more players forward.

Key Moments

• 9th minute: Excelsior’s first meaningful attack ended with a low shot from outside the box that was gathered safely.
• 34th minute: Deijl headed home from a corner to give Go Ahead Eagles the lead.
• 52nd minute: Excelsior forced a smart save from the visiting goalkeeper after a cross from the right.
• 67th minute: Go Ahead Eagles nearly doubled their advantage on the counter, but the final shot was blocked.
• 84th minute: Excelsior appealed for a penalty, but the defender’s challenge was judged to be clean.

Tactical Story

Excelsior lined up with intent to dominate the ball, using width to stretch the visitors’ midfield and deliver crosses into the box. However, their final ball lacked precision, and Go Ahead Eagles’ centre-backs dealt well with aerial deliveries. The home side’s best moments came from quick combinations around the edge of the area, but the final finish was missing.

Go Ahead Eagles operated with a compact mid-block, denying central space and forcing Excelsior sideways. Their ability to defend set pieces and counter-attack in transition was crucial. Once ahead, they managed the game intelligently, slowing the tempo and committing bodies behind the ball.

Standout Players

Deijl’s goal was the obvious highlight, but his defensive work at the back was equally important. The Go Ahead Eagles goalkeeper commanded his area well and made a key second-half save. For Excelsior, the right-sided attacker was their most persistent threat, while the midfield captain tried to drive the team forward in the closing stages.

What the Result Means

The away win strengthens Go Ahead Eagles’ position in the Eredivisie table and boosts their push for a European play-off place. For Excelsior, the defeat leaves them searching for consistency in the bottom half of the standings. The home side showed enough spirit to suggest they can climb away from danger, but they must find more cutting edge in the final third.
