FC Twente Enschede produced a disciplined away performance to beat AZ Alkmaar 2-0 in the Eredivisie at the AFAS Stadion, turning a compact defensive plan and two sharp attacking moments into a valuable three points. The result strengthens Twente’s push toward the European places and leaves AZ with questions about their cutting edge in the final third.

Match overview

The contest followed a familiar pattern in Alkmaar: AZ enjoyed the bulk of possession and territory, while Twente stayed organized, denied central spaces, and looked to strike in transition. Twente’s structure held firm through the opening exchanges, and once they took the lead, the visitors became increasingly comfortable managing the game.

• Competition: Netherlands Eredivisie
• Venue: AFAS Stadion, Alkmaar
• Final score: AZ Alkmaar 0-2 FC Twente Enschede

Key moments

Twente opened the scoring in the 23rd minute after forcing a turnover in midfield. Sem Steijn timed his run into the penalty area perfectly and finished low beyond the AZ goalkeeper, rewarding the visitors for their patience and pressing discipline. AZ responded with a spell of pressure, but Twente’s back line and goalkeeper Lars Unnerstall dealt with a series of crosses and second balls.

The decisive blow arrived in the 71st minute. Twente broke quickly down the right, and Daan Rots carried the ball into the box before finishing with composure to make it 2-0. AZ pushed bodies forward late on, but the visitors managed the closing stages intelligently, slowing the tempo and protecting their clean sheet.

Tactical story

AZ’s plan revolved around patient build-up and getting their full-backs high to stretch Twente’s midfield. Twente, however, kept their defensive block narrow and forced AZ into wide areas where crosses were easier to defend. The visitors’ midfield screened the space in front of the back four, limiting clear sight of goal for AZ’s attacking midfielders.

When Twente won the ball, they attacked with purpose. Their transitions were direct, and both goals came from moments when AZ were stretched after committing players forward. It was not a performance built on sustained dominance, but it was a highly effective away display in the Eredivisie.

Standout performers

Sem Steijn was central to Twente’s attacking threat, combining intelligent movement with a calm finish for the opener. Daan Rots added the second and constantly tested AZ’s defensive line with his running. At the back, Lars Unnerstall produced the kind of assured goalkeeping performance that gives a team confidence to defend deep.

For AZ, Sven Mijnans tried to link play between midfield and attack, while Ruben van Bommel carried the most consistent wide threat. Wouter Goes defended aggressively at the back, but AZ lacked the final pass and finishing touch to convert their possession into goals.

What the result means

The away win gives Twente momentum in the Eredivisie standings and underlines their ability to win matches without dominating the ball. For AZ, the defeat is a setback in their pursuit of the top positions and a reminder that control alone is not enough in a league where transitions decide so many games. The head-to-head result will also give Twente confidence for the remainder of the campaign.
