Key moments

ADO Den Haag set the tone early with an aggressive press and were rewarded in the 18th minute. Milan de Haan collected the ball on the left, shifted onto his right foot and curled a precise finish beyond the Sparta goalkeeper to open the scoring.

Sparta Rotterdam responded well and found an equaliser six minutes before half-time. Ruben Bakker rose highest from a corner and powered a header into the net, briefly silencing the home crowd and sending the teams into the break level at 1-1.

The second half belonged to ADO. In the 57th minute, captain Jeroen van der Velden arrived late in the box to meet a low cross and restored the home side’s lead. Sparta pushed forward in search of another equaliser, but ADO’s midfield kept the game under control and threatened on the counter-attack.

The decisive moment came in the 84th minute when Davy van den Berg broke clear behind the Sparta defence and finished low into the corner to make it 3-1. Sparta had a late half-chance from a set piece, but ADO goalkeeper Pieter van der Laan was equal to it and the hosts saw out the win comfortably.

Tactical story

ADO Den Haag’s 4-3-3 shape worked effectively against Sparta’s build-up play. The home side pressed high through the front three, forcing Sparta into hurried passes and limiting their ability to find rhythm in central areas. When Sparta did manage to progress the ball, ADO’s midfield trio dropped quickly to protect the back four.

Sparta Rotterdam enjoyed spells of possession, particularly before half-time, but struggled to turn that control into clear chances. Their equaliser came from a set piece rather than open play, and after the restart they were stretched by ADO’s direct running and quick transitions. The hosts’ willingness to attack down the flanks created space for crosses, and two of their three goals came from wide areas.

Standout players

Milan de Haan was a constant threat for ADO Den Haag, combining close control with intelligent movement and opening the scoring with a fine individual effort. Jeroen van der Velden led by example in midfield, scoring the crucial second goal and helping his side regain control after Sparta’s equaliser.

Davy van den Berg’s late goal capped a strong all-round display, while goalkeeper Pieter van der Laan made important saves at key moments. For Sparta Rotterdam, Ruben Bakker was the bright spot, scoring their only goal and competing well in the air throughout.

What the result means

The win strengthens ADO Den Haag’s position in the Eredivisie standings and gives them momentum heading into their next fixture. Sparta Rotterdam remain in mid-table and will need to improve their defensive organisation if they are to climb higher in the coming weeks.

The head-to-head record now adds another home victory for ADO Den Haag, who will look to build on this performance as the Eredivisie season progresses.
