Volendam continued their impressive home form with a solid 2-0 victory over Vitesse Arnhem at the Kras Stadion on 10 October 2026, inflicting another damaging defeat on the visitors’ promotion hopes in the Netherlands Eerste Divisie. First-half headers from centre-back Damon Mirani and striker Robert Mühren secured the win, moving Volendam up to fourth in the table, while Vitesse remain outside the playoff places.

Match Overview

Vitesse started the game brightly, dominating possession and forcing Volendam deep into their own half. However, the home side’s defensive resilience, marshalled by captain Mirani, frustrated the visitors. Volendam’s game plan was clear: soak up pressure and strike on set pieces. It worked to perfection. Vitesse’s midfield, missing their creative spark, struggled to break down a compact 4-4-2, and their crosses were routinely cleared. The game turned on two well-worked corners, and Vitesse never recovered.

Key Moments

• 19th minute – 1-0: Volendam took the lead from a corner. Damon Mirani rose above his marker to power a header into the net from six yards.
• 67th minute – 2-0: Another corner, another goal. Robert Mühren found space at the back post to nod home a deep delivery.

Tactical Story

Volendam’s 4-4-2 was designed to be hard to break down, with two banks of four sitting deep and inviting Vitesse to play in front of them. Vitesse’s 4-3-3 lacked width and penetration, with their wingers often cutting inside into traffic. The visitors had 63% possession but only managed three shots on target, all from distance. Volendam’s set-piece coach will be delighted with the two goals, both executed with precision. Vitesse’s frustration boiled over late on with a series of yellow cards, and their manager was seen shaking his head on the touchline.

Standout Players

Damon Mirani was colossal at the back, winning everything in the air and scoring the opener. Robert Mühren, the veteran striker, showed his experience with a well-taken header and intelligent link-up play. Volendam goalkeeper Barry Lauwers made a crucial save at 1-0 to preserve the lead. For Vitesse, only midfielder Marco van Ginkel looked capable of unlocking the defence, but he was often isolated.

Season Impact

Volendam move up to fourth, just three points off the automatic promotion spots. Vitesse, a club with a rich history, now sit 11th and are in danger of missing the playoffs entirely. The pressure is growing on Vitesse’s coaching staff, and they face a must-win home game against Dordrecht next. Volendam travel to RKC Waalwijk, confident they can continue their strong run. This win was built on organisation and set-piece excellence, hallmarks of a team that could go all the way.
