Zwaluwen hit four to beat VV Sint Bavo in Derde Divisie away thriller

Zwaluwen produced one of their most complete attacking displays of the Netherlands Derde Divisie season, defeating VV Sint Bavo 4-2 on 25 October 2026. The visitors combined sharp movement in the final third with ruthless finishing, turning a competitive contest into a well-earned away victory that strengthens their position in the league standings.

VV Sint Bavo had their moments and scored twice, but they struggled to contain Zwaluwen’s runners between the lines. The match was decided by Zwaluwen’s ability to convert pressure into goals during two key spells, one before the break and another early in the second half.

Match overview

The opening exchanges were balanced, with VV Sint Bavo looking to impose themselves at home and Zwaluwen content to press selectively. Once Zwaluwen found their rhythm, however, the game tilted in their favour. Their midfield won the majority of second balls, and their wide players repeatedly attacked the space behind the full-backs. VV Sint Bavo’s response was spirited, but their defensive line was stretched too often.

Zwaluwen’s fourth goal effectively settled the contest, although VV Sint Bavo kept pushing and were rewarded with a second goal. The final minutes were more open than the visitors would have liked, but Zwaluwen managed the game well enough to secure all three points.

Key moments

• Opening goal: Ruben van Leeuwen gave Zwaluwen the lead with a composed finish after a quick passing move through midfield.
• Sint Bavo response: Kevin van Dijk levelled for the hosts with a well-struck effort from the edge of the area.
• Before half-time: Jesse de Groot restored Zwaluwen’s advantage, finishing from close range after a corner was only partially cleared.
• Second-half surge: Van Leeuwen added his second and Milan Bakker made it 4-1, putting the visitors firmly in control.
• Late consolation: Bram de Wit pulled one back for VV Sint Bavo, but Zwaluwen saw out the remaining minutes comfortably.

Tactical story

Zwaluwen’s success came from their aggressive pressing and quick ball circulation. They denied VV Sint Bavo time on the ball in central areas and forced turnovers high up the pitch, which allowed them to attack before the home defence could set. Their front three rotated constantly, making it difficult for Sint Bavo’s centre-backs to track runners.

VV Sint Bavo tried to build through the flanks, but their crosses were often met by a well-positioned Zwaluwen goalkeeper and a defence that defended its box with composure. When Sint Bavo did find space, they looked capable of scoring, but their inability to sustain pressure for long periods proved costly. Zwaluwen’s midfield control was the foundation of the result.

Standout performers

Ruben van Leeuwen was the obvious attacking hero for Zwaluwen, scoring twice and constantly stretching the defence with his movement. Jesse de Groot’s energy in midfield set the tone, while Milan Bakker’s second-half goal capped a strong all-round display. For VV Sint Bavo, Kevin van Dijk was their most dangerous outlet and took his goal well, while Bram de Wit’s late strike underlined the hosts’ persistence.

League impact

The victory gives Zwaluwen a valuable three points on the road and boosts their momentum in the Netherlands Derde Divisie. For VV Sint Bavo, the defeat is a reminder of the fine margins in the division: they scored twice at home but were punished for defensive gaps and turnovers in key areas. Both sides now turn their attention to the next round of fixtures, with Zwaluwen aiming to build on a convincing attacking performance and Sint Bavo seeking a more compact response.
